Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine
NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant
Job overview
Fixed Term 2 Years
This post offers the exciting opportunity of joining our dynamic Acute Medical team. It is suitable for candidates looking to pursue a career in Acute Medicine, and on the Specialist Register (either AIM or GIM). This is a 2 Year fixed term post in acute medicine, for those wanting to explore the portfolio route (CESR) onto the Specialist Register.
The Royal Bolton Hospital was one of the first sites in Northwest England to appoint a consultant in acute medicine, back in 1998. Since then, we have had a proud history of delivering excellent training and pioneering acute medical care. We have recently moved to providing Same Day Emergency Care 24 hours per day which has contributed to some of the biggest improvements to Emergency Department performance in the country.
In September 2025, the University of Greater Manchester will accept its first ever cohort of undergraduate medical students. The medical school will be housed in the state-of-the-art, purpose built school on the hospital grounds. This will provide excellent opportunities for those with an interest in medical education.
We are looking for candidates with a passion for delivery of acute medicine and same day emergency care. The post is on a full time basis with on call-commitment. We will also consider applications from those wishing to share sessions with other specialties, based on their registration. Applications are requested via TRAC.
Please see the recruitment pack for further details.
Main duties of the job
At present seven consultants supply between 10 -12 PAs each. The aim would be for all potential admissions to have a consultant review in any of the areas described as standard. This Acute Medicine Consultant opinion should be available consistently from 0800 – 1600 each weekday.
Out of hours cover for acute medicine is provided on a 1 in 22 rota during the week and 1 in 11 at weekends in combination with the rest of the medical consultants. With recruitment, we aim to move to 1 in 8 for weekends. We also cover the AAU 1600-2000 on a rotating scheme between the GIM physicians. The Consultant on call shares care from 1300 each weekday, stay on the unit until 2000 and then supply cover from home.
There are plans to try and extend the working day of the Acute Medicine Consultants to 8 pm every day on a rota basis and the new appointee would be expected to co-operate with this once we recruit to establishment.
In addition to on-call staff, the unit has a team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners, who also support with weekend working. There are up to 3 Specialist Trainees in Acute Medicine, CMTs in ACCS, and 4 foundation programme doctors. Also we have GPST1 trainees that rotate between AMU and our IMC facilities. We also employ clinical fellows and senior clinical fellows to support with the smooth operation of the unit. Additionally, a Senior Clinical Pharmacist supports prescribing and discharge prescriptions.
