The job holder will be expected to work as part of a team providing support to the Laboratory Medicine department, by assisting in routine analytical tasks and procedures under the supervision of a State Registered Biomedical Scientist.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for a suitably qualified individual to work as part of a professional and efficient team in our busy Blood Sciences Laboratories.

The successful candidate will join our friendly team of experienced Biomedical Scientists and support staff. The post will be within the Clinical Chemistry Department of the Blood Sciences Laboratory.  Rotation through other sections of Chemistry will be required once fully trained and competency assessed.  The post holder must be available to work shift patterns to support the service as and when required

The laboratories are well equipped, computerised, UKAS accredited and HCPC approved . The Blood Sciences Laboratories process around 900,000 patient samples per year.

You will be encouraged and supported to participate in further education, training and Continuing Professional Development.  This can be discussed during interview.   The post holder will work mainly Monday to Friday, although flexibility around working may be required to ensure continuity of the service, this will include some weekend and evening working.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will perform routine procedures involving scientific and technical work to aid clinicians in the effective diagnosis and treatment of patients.  The post holder will participate in the supervision and training of Medical Laboratory Assistants, and Support Workers

  • Foundation degree or equivalent knowledge
  • Part 1/2 IBMS qualification
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL
  • Working towards Part 1/2 IBMS qualification

  • Experience of routine laboratory procedures
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Experience of working on own intitiative
  • Recent experience of working in NHS hospital lab
