Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

At East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care.  We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 9,500 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.

Job overview

We have a post for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia at East Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. This post will fulfil the requirements of a CT3 equivalent post. The job would be for 12 months in the first instance with option to extend depending on the needs of the department.

We are a big department of 41 Anaesthetic Consultants, 18 Intensive Care Consultants,16 Associate Specialists/Specialty doctors, approximately 28 trainees ranging from new starter CT1 to advanced year ST7. We work across two sites: Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. There is a wide variety of surgical specialties ranging from day case surgery at our Elective Centre to major cancer surgery in head and neck, hepatopancreaticobiliary, colorectal, urology,
gynaecology and major vascular surgery. We currently have three DaVinci robots used for urology, colorectal, gynaecological and HPB surgery. We have a busy Obstetric Unit with approximately 6500 deliveries per year.

Main duties of the job

We have a busy 28 bed critical care unit that cares for 1600 patients per year. We take medical and surgical emergency patients and postoperative elective patients requiring a higher level of care.

We are involved in several local and national research and audit projects and were one of the forerunners in enhanced recovery.

The department has an excellent reputation for training and trainee support.

We have on-call rotas for Obstetrics, ITU (three tier) and general emergencies. The obstetric on call has second on call resident senior middle grade anaesthetists and a non-resident Consultant. Critical Care has two trainees and an Intensive Care Consultant (two at weekends)
and the general rota is covered by a Consultant, with two separate Consultants for both the emergency and trauma theatres at weekends. Initially you will be part of the obstetric on call rota but there will be opportunity for experience and development in other areas.

We have good office facilities including splendid bean to cup coffee machines on both sites. Offices are open plan and there is always someone around to discuss problem cases. Our secretaries are quite brilliant at sorting out most things and are very friendly.

Working for our organisation

Established in 2003 East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) is a large integrated health care organisation providing high quality acute secondary healthcare for the people of East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen.

Our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care.  We currently provide high quality services and treat over 700,000 patients a year from the most serious of emergencies to planned operations and procedures. We employ over 8,000 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work and achievements.

Our organisation is driven by our strategic objectives and organisational values and we look for people who are strongly aligned to them.  The successful applicant will join a flexible, supportive team who work well together.  We have a high commitment to teaching and training, receive excellent feedback from our trainees and have high exam pass rates.
