Job overview
This is a consultant level post, partly funded by Macmillan, which will specifically provide input to the cancer psychology pathways. Therefore this post holder requires extensive clinical experience in cancer, as well as broader physical health psychology.
You will provide operational leadership to the inpatient and outpatient pathways for cancer psychology and the new Macmillan service. The new Macmillan pathway aims to ensure that adults affected by cancer experience excellent psycho-social care wherever they are on the cancer pathway to increase;
- Timely & equitable access to appropriate mental health support integrated with cancer care clinical pathways
- Improved coordination and integrated psycho-social support across primary, community, social and acute settings
- Psychosocial education and support for health care professionals
- Improved integrated support for people with learning disabilities and pre-existing mental health conditions with cancer
The service places a high value on service user involvement and the value of co-production and design in delivering personalised care. We therefore welcome applications from people with lived experience of cancer and/or long-term physical health conditions
The post holder will also be a core member of the consultant leadership team in CHPS and will support the Head of Service and colleagues with the strategic development of the service, providing clinical leadership and line management within the service.
Main duties of the job
You will be the clinical lead for the new Macmillan pathway in cancer, managing and supporting the team and contributing to the implementation, development and evaluation of the service and Macmillan Project. You will provide highly specialised psychological therapy and assessment for patients with Cancer for patients living in Preston, Chorley and South Cumbria.
Collaboration is a critical aspect of this role. You will work closely with the psycho-oncology collaborative, psychology colleagues, MDT's and key stakeholders, both within the Clinical Business Unit and Voluntary sector.
You will provide supervision to psychological practitioners and heath service and contribute to and facilitate a varied training programme for professionals. You will facilitate triage meetings and contribute to highly specialist clinical health psychology discussions for patients living with cancer, and support with integrated multidisciplinary care.
As part of the Macmillan project you will engage in audit and research within the pathway to further the development of the pathway.
There is an expectation for you to undertake extended roles and responsibilities within the Clinical Health Psychology Services and to work flexibly across the services as directed by the Head of the Clinical Health Psychology. You will also provide managerial support and professional leadership to members of the psychology team working across a range of physical health specialities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To develop and clinically lead the new Macmillan pathway which has been designed to increase access for patients living cancer in Preston, Chorley and South Cumbria.
- To lead on the cancer and Macmillan psychology pathways, which includes: overseeing the provision of, and delivering, short-term assessment, formulation and intervention across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- To provide integrated multidisciplinary care (joint appointments and MDT assessment clinics) across the inpatient and outpatient pathways to patients referred by our MDT colleagues.
- To train and support MDT colleagues in psychologically informed care through education, teaching and consultation.
- To provide clinical supervision to the MDT teams and teams working in cancer
- To routinely undertake research, audit and service evaluation to feed into the Macmillan project. To support with preparing and presenting reports of clinical activity and effectiveness to key stakeholders, Macmillan and the ICB.
- To contribute to MDT promotion of patient need, clinical symptoms and approaches to care.
- To contribute to the development of the care pathways (including developing relationships with key partners within the ICS).
- To work in consultation and collaboration with psychologist colleagues, MDT colleagues, and key stakeholders.
- To undertake extended roles and responsibilities within CHPs
- To work flexibly across CHPs as required and directed by the Head of the Clinical Health Psychology Services.
- The post holder will be a HCPC registered practitioner psychologist with demonstrable leadership skills and experience at a similar level/grade.

Person specification
Qualifications and Education
Essential criteria
- Doctorate in Clinical Psychology accredited by the HCPC (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 as accredited by the BPS).
- Or Qualification as a Counselling Psychologist
- HCPC registered as a practitioner psychologist
Desirable criteria
- Qualification in supervision
- Evidence of peer reviewed publications, presentations at conferences, or similar contributions
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Well-developed highly specialised knowledge of the theory and practice of psychological models and therapies/interventions in clinical psychology and health psychology
- Doctoral level knowledge of psychology theory and practice, assessment, psychological therapies and their application
- Post qualification training and experience of two or more distinct psychological therapies.
- Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both practice and management of service
- Knowledge of relevant standards, policies and guidelines in the NHS, health psychology, oncology and palliative care.
- Experience as a HCPC registered practitioner psychologist
- Able to work with a range of complex clinical presentations in various settings including inpatient and outpatient. Also to work under pressure whilst maintaining a high degree of professionalism.
- Experience of developing and leading clinical services / pathways within a physical health/oncology setting
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
- Experience of teaching, training and professional and clinical supervision.
- Experienced in the delivery of evidence-based interventions in clinical /health psychology.
- Experienced in the delivery of evidence-based interventions in clinical /health psychology.
- Experience in audit and evaluation of clinical services
- Experience of NHS management tasks and multi-professional and inter-agency working

- Knowledge of local NHS structures. Experience of working with service users as co-producers
- Experience of applying health psychology within different contexts and settings
