Job overview

We are a busy department with multiple clinics taking place. Pre-Op Assessment involves working with other disciplines and specialities to ensure our patients are getting a smooth Pre-Op journey prior to their Elective surgery.

This post is band 5

This role will deliver direct patient care for patients who are to have Elective Orthopaedic/Surgical procedures. This will be undertaken by demonstrating skills that are specific to preoperative assessment that identifies the patient’s fitness for the elective procedures through assessment.

Evidence of qualifications/certificates will be required at interview. 

Main duties of the job

To identify through clinical assessment of patients requiring optimisation Pre-Elective surgery.

Through clinical decision making refer patients to appropriate specialities for opinion and/or required investigations.

Work within multi-disciplinary protocols, trust policies and guidelines.

Maintain accurate and detailed documented records of patients journey through the Pre-Operative assessment process .

Keep up to date with current NICE Pre-Op guidelines.

Ensure clinical competencies are current best practice working along side Anaesthetists and Surgeons with effective communication skills.

On-Call

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Be responsible to maintain a professional accountability and professionalism
  • To maintain self-development through the practice of safe standards, trust policies and guidelines and work within compliance with the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Be responsible for the delivery of a high quality assessments and care, ensuring that clinical care is organised to meet the needs of the individual and ensuring patient safety.
  • To provide and deliver specialist patient centred care to all patients attending through the Pre-Operative Assessment processes
  • To provide and be able to make autonomous clinical decisions, referring to appropriate clinicians, and other services
  • Promote best working practices through participation of audits
  • Uphold good communication skills both verbally and through concise accurate documentation. Provide clinical supervision for all staff.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills in promoting up to date best evidence based clinical practice

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Level Registered Nurse
  • Evidence of recognised education and knowledge of clinical examination based on an assessment of clinical competences.
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of further study for clinical assessment skills.
  • Evidence of working towards degree level education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent and relevant clinical experience within Pre Op Assessment clinic.
  • Experience of working independently
  • Previous work in surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of involvement in audit/research
  • Able to work autonomously, within broad clinical parameters and manage own workload

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstration of specialist clinical skills for effective patient management relevant to the service.
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical skills and experience within Pre Op clinic setting
  • IT skills (including knowledge of HIS)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues and policy relating to specialist area and role.
Desirable criteria
  • Research awareness relevant to speciality and audits
  • Understanding of education/student requirements
