Job overview

This is a 9 month  Locum post for Community Neurodevelopmental Services delivering care across Chorley South Ribble and Greater Preston by senior medical staff. 

The Consultant Community Paediatrician will provide expertise in Community Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics and is expected to manage the full range of presentations in this area of practice alongside various colleagues.

The post holder will work closely within a team of 8 consultants and one speciality doctor to provide input to children and young people with a range of Neurodevelopmental conditions, e.g. autism, Special Educational Needs or Neurodisability and contribute to Initial Health Care Assessments of children / young people who are being Looked After (Children in care). We are looking for a committed and passionate clinician to join the team of paediatric staff, providing integrated Community Services to children and young people across Central Lancashire. 

There is no on-call commitment or involvement in assessment of children and young people referred for safeguarding concerns.

The post holder will be based at Broadoaks Child Development Centre, Leyland and work within the community services across Chorley and South Ribble and Greater Preston.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to:

        Ensure high professional standards of clinical care of patients.

        Assist in the smooth running of the Child Health Directorate, and work with colleagues in the provision of an effective Community Neurodevelopmental Paediatric service.

        Demonstrate commitment to the care of patients and to ensure with colleagues that appropriate arrangements are made for cover of leave and off duty periods.

        Take part in the management of the service and to attend meetings of the Community Neurodevelopmental Department and other committees they may be appointed to.

        Participate in the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s CPD programme, the trust’s appraisal and job planning process in a timely manner. 

        Complete mandatory training requirements on a regular basis in a timely manner.

Working for our organisation

General 

This post is mainly based at Broadoaks CDC. The post holder will have full-time secretarial support and access to IT including the Internet. All senior doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and are supported with the revalidation process.

Child Health Clinical Business Unit 

The Community Neurodevelopmental Paediatric Department is part of the Child Health Clinical Business Unit along with General Paediatrics and Neonatology.

Community Neurodevelopmental Child Health services are delivered within two child development teams (Ashton Health Centre in Preston and Broadoaks CDC in Leyland) and a number of health centres and special schools within the district. There are close links with therapy services, CAMHS, learning disability and clinical psychology services run by Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust. The tertiary paediatric Audiology service is delivered from Fulwood Clinics with satellite clinics across Lancashire.

Secondary child health services are commissioned from Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB. The acute children’s unit is based at the Royal Preston Hospital for the federated districts of Preston and Chorley, with a combined population of 390,000.  All paediatric inpatient services are located on the first floor of the Royal Preston Hospital (64 beds) with neonatal services located in a separate unit (Sharoe Green Unit).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Must be on GMC’s Specialist Register or be within 6 months of receiving it at the time of interview.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or other higher degree

Experience and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to independently undertake specialist medical assessments, investigations and clinical management of patients with Neurodevelopmental / Neurodisability related problems
  • Able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
  • Valid BLS Training
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in other areas relevant to Community Child Health e.g. General Practice, Child Mental Health, Public Health, Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Neurodisability
  • Specialist experience in one or more particular areas of Community Child Health practice to take on a lead role
