We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Shift Maintenance Fitter to join our team to help keep our hospital environment safe, operational and support the health and well-being of our patients, staff and visitors.

This constitutes a blend of planned preventative maintenance coupled with emergency repairs and everything in between.

We cannot even begin to tell you what a great place this is to work, with so many interesting and intricate engineering systems that you just won’t find anywhere else. You will demonstrate a good working knowledge of critical mechanical infrastructure ranging from steam raising plant, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to Medical Gas and building management systems in compliance with all statutory requirements and good practice guidelines.

The Bottom Line – What Do you Receive?

Salary:

The NHS Band for this position is Band 4 which for regular hours works out at £25,147 rising to £27,596 pa (after 3 years).

However, as a Shift Maintenance Fitter working for our Trust and with the RRP included, based on our current shift pattern this equates to approx. £32,100 to £35,000 (after 3 years) pa.

On top of this there may be irregular overtime opportunities throughout the year. Also within the benefits is optional inclusion into one of the best pension packages available

You will apply a high degree of attention to detail and be precise in the recording of relevant results so we have effective and accurate records.
You will be issued with our easily recognisable Hospital uniform and will work as part of the mechanical team with 11 colleagues carrying out all manner of planned preventative maintenance and emergency breakdown repairs to engineering plant and equipment.

Owing to the skills and experience you possess, many of the repairs will need to be attended to urgently and some aspects of the work can be hazardous.

  • Carry out reactive and planned preventative maintenance along with inspection and testing of complex systems including Steam raising plant (Shell Boilers),condensate & distribution pipework, MTHW, LTHW, HTG and DHWS systems, pressure systems, unvented and vented hot water systems, chilled water systems, medical gas systems. ventilation & air conditioning systems, compressed air systems, building management systems, catering equipment and other fixed hospital systems in line with statutory requirements and Trust procedures.
  • Prioritise and respond efficiently to all planned and reactive maintenance jobs to meet SLA's.
  • Identify, prioritise and plan own work load and actively participate in the operation of the performance management information system, including the completion of all paper work required in a timely manner. This will be aided by the use of a hand held electronic device.
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed such as the completion of risk assessment, SOP's Trust Policies and PTW procedures.
  • Advise the Maintenance Manager / Engineering Manager (Operational) regarding plant or equipment failure and to request in writing the supply of goods and/or services with reference to manufacturer’s manuals etc. 
  • Maintain stock levels for spares and equipment.
  • Advises the on call Estates Manager and Senior Hospital Staff (Duty Manager on call/Directorate Managers) on maintenance issues as required outside of normal office hours.
  • Provide operational advisory support to Trust staff and managers to ensure compliance with all safety standards and procedures.
  • Liaise with contractors, utility suppliers, professional parties and other service users both during normal working hours and out of hours.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with managers, colleagues, contractors and trust wide service users.
  • Liaise with Wards and Departments to ensure requested work is specified correctly to meet the users’ needs, provided efficiently and completed within the agreed priority response periods. This applies to all work requests including patient critical engineering plant, equipment and building services. 
  • Assist with, and support the Trusts Engineering Managers in project work, new equipment testing and commissioning, specifications, surveys, costing and other similar duties. Undertake inspections for pre-installations and investigate services which may be required for new equipment and carry out minor installation improvement works.
  • Refer to and understand Engineering/Technical drawings, specifications and technical manuals.
  • Be prepared to work in hazardous areas, confined spaces and on contaminated equipment taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment in accordance with Trust policy and safe working procedures. Ensure that Risk Assessments and the use of operational procedures are actioned and observed by all maintenance staff.
  • Ensure the security of all plant, equipment and buildings under the jurisdiction of the Maintenance Department. Make sure that any work areas are secure when working. Ensure that plant rooms are locked at all times.
