We are looking for a compassionate, caring and motivated individual to join our team on the maternity ward at Royal Preston Hospital

Maternity Ward A is a busy, fast paced Antenatal ward, with high patient turnover and where every day is different.  This post is to cover a Monday - Sunday during day time hours - shifts will include weekends.

The Maternity Ward Clerk plays a key administrative role in supporting the smooth and efficient running of the maternity ward. The post holder will provide a professional, friendly, and confidential administrative service to staff, patients, and visitors, ensuring accurate record-keeping and effective communication across the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

Administrative Duties

  • Provide a comprehensive clerical service to the maternity ward
  • Maintain accurate patient records, both electronic and paper-based
  • Input and update patient information on hospital systems in a timely manner
  • Manage admissions, discharges, and transfers on relevant systems
  • Prepare and organise patient notes and documentation
  • Ensure all filing is accurate, up to date, and securely stored

Communication

  • Act as the first point of contact for patients, relatives, and visitors
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and direct enquiries appropriately
  • Liaise effectively with midwives, maternity support staff, obstetricians, and other healthcare professionals
  • Communicate sensitively with patients and families in a sometimes emotional environment

Reception Duties

  • Welcome patients and visitors in a courteous and professional manner
  • Maintain a calm and organised reception area
  • Manage ward entry systems where applicable

Coordination & Support

  • Assist in coordinating ward activity, including appointment bookings where required
  • Support the clinical team by ensuring documentation is readily available
  • Monitor stock levels of office supplies and order as needed

Confidentiality & Compliance

  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in line with GDPR and organisational policies
  • Ensure all work complies with Trust policies and procedures
  • Follow safeguarding and health & safety guidelines at all times
