Job overview

Join our team and support the ward manager in achieving high standards of safe care, providing support to junior staff and students. The role will involve being the perfect role model and leader across Day & night rotation to support the team and maintain an effective ward.

Your role will be to support the Ward Manager, ensuring the provision of excellent care and compassion for all patients and visitors . You will be responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, whilst providing leadership and direction to the team. Responsibilities will include completing appraisals, maintaining training rates and supporting our team to develop to their full potential.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will spearhead the delivery and coordination of care, ensuring seamless healthcare operations through adherence to professional practice, delegation, and supervision of junior staff. Your influence extends to setting, monitoring, and maintaining high standards of care, actively contributing to an enhanced patient experience and overall care outcomes.

Additionally, you play a crucial role in proactive risk management and maintaining patient safety. Strict adherence to health, safety, and security regulations, along with compliance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines, ensures a stable healthcare environment prioritising patient well-being. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse or Matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within or by the ward, department, service or team.
  • Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guidelines.
  • Assist and support the Ward Manager in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes
  • Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation
  • Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.
  • Promote provision of patient education and health promotion 
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.
  • Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness
  • Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice
  • To participate in education and training of junior staff.

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 years post registration within neurosurgical and leadership knowledge
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
  • Experience of implementing changes to benefit patients and improve nursing practice
  • Evidence of leadership experience and learning.
  • Knowledge of Ethical issues
  • Awareness of recent advances within Nursing practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Research and Development
  • Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional education or development in area of speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Degree
  • Post registration qualification in area of speciality area
