The cancer centre at Lancashire Teaching Hospital has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated registered nurse/allied health professional to join our well established acute oncology team as a metastatic spinal cord coordinator. The role involves coordinating the metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) pathway for patients with impending, confirmed or suspected MSCC as per the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance Network MSCC group.

You will work alongside other clinical colleagues in oncology, neurosurgery, palliative care, acute medicine and radiology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised. This is a pivotal role to ensure effective decision making between disciplines to ensure prompt, appropriate management for each patient. The role will involve supporting the patient and family through the diagnosis of MSCC. You will also provide a point of reference and advice for clinical teams responsible for patients with suspected, impending and confirmed metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC).  This role will include contribution to the development of clinical guidelines, audit & staff education.

Main duties of the job

As the MSCC Pathway Coordinator, you will play a pivotal role in orchestrating the management of patients presenting with impending, confirmed, or suspected metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) within the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance Network MSCC group.

Your responsibilities will include providing authoritative guidance and support to clinical teams navigating the complexities of MSCC cases. You will serve as the primary point of contact, facilitating communication and collaboration until a comprehensive management plan is established, ensuring timely and effective patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work alongside other clinical colleagues in oncology, neurosurgery, palliative care, acute medicine and radiology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised. This will include contribution to the development of clinical guidelines, audit & staff education.

The coordinator will ensure that accurate data is obtained about patients with impending and confirmed MSCC. This could include both quantitative data (e.g. relating to time scale) and qualitative data (e.g. presenting symptoms). Audit of this data will be provided annually and outcomes reviewed with the multidisciplinary team to inform future practice.

Person specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC registration
  • Relevant diploma in nursing
  • Post registration qualification in specialist area
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Advanced communication skills or willingness to undertake

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the guidelines relating to the management of Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression.
  • Knowledge of the anatomy of the spine
  • Comprehensive IT knowledge
  • Post registration clinical experience in speciality or cancer related area
  • Management experience in speciality or related area
  • Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the Peer review process in relation to acute oncology and MSCC
  • Participation in service development and implementation of change
  • Participation in the audit process
  • Able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of current issues within the NHS.
