Junior Clinical Fellow in Paediatrics

NHS Medical & Dental: Junior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

The Paediatric Department at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Junior Clinical Fellow (JCF) to join our dynamic team, providing high‑quality care across Acute Paediatrics, Children’s Assessment Unit, and the Paediatric Ward at Royal Preston Hospital.

This post is ideal for doctors wishing to gain further paediatric experience—whether preparing for specialty training, exploring a career in child health, or seeking to broaden their clinical skills in a supportive and well‑established unit. The successful candidate will work alongside a friendly multidisciplinary team including Consultants, Specialty Trainees, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, and Nursing staff, delivering compassionate care to children and young people across the region.

The role offers excellent clinical exposure, opportunities to develop procedural skills, and experience managing a wide range of acute and chronic paediatric presentations. You will participate in the tier‑1 rota, including out‑of‑hours commitments, with support always available from senior colleagues on‑site or via resident and non‑resident middle‑grade cover.

We welcome applications from doctors with a passion for paediatrics, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering safe and high‑quality care to children and their families.

Main duties of the job

The Junior Clinical Fellow will work as part of the tier‑1 paediatric medical rota, supporting the delivery of high‑quality care to children and young people across the Paediatric Ward, Children’s Assessment Unit (PAU), Paediatric Emergency Pathway, and associated services.

Clinical Duties

  • Provide day‑to‑day medical care for children admitted to the Paediatric Ward, PAU, and short‑stay areas.

  • Undertake initial assessment, examination, investigation, and management of acutely unwell paediatric patients, with senior support readily available.

  • Participate in the evaluation and management of both acute and chronic conditions seen within general paediatrics.

  • Support timely patient flow, including safe admission, treatment, review, and discharge processes.

  • Perform clinical procedures appropriate to the level of training (e.g., cannulation, venepuncture, nasogastric tube insertion).

  • Liaise effectively with nursing staff, ACPs, therapy teams, and senior medical colleagues to ensure coordinated care.

  • Provide clerking and ongoing care for emergency admissions via PAU and the Paediatric ED pathway.

Rota and On‑Call Duties

  • Participate in the tier‑1 1:8 rotational rota, including evenings, nights, weekends, and bank holidays.

Working for our organisation

Being part of a teaching hospital you will also have the opportunity to be involved in teaching and training, continuing professional development, and participation in audit and research.

You will be able to develop teaching experience and expertise and work alongside medical students from the University of Manchester. You will have the opportunity to deliver formal and informal teaching sessions either on wards or in our Health Academy; which has excellent facilities including a 24 hour library and a simulation suite.

We are an enthusiastic and a friendly team dedicated to provide high quality care to our patients and we would love you to join us!
