Main duties of the job

The Medical Education Pharmacist at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals undertakes a highly specialised role that is fundamental to the delivery of safe prescribing education and the development of the future medical and pharmacy workforce. The postholder leads and coordinates the prescribing and therapeutics curriculum for University of Manchester medical students, delivering teaching across a broad range of settings including ward-based learning, small group teaching, lectures, online sessions and individual support. They provide expert education on medicines management, therapeutics, medicines optimisation and safe prescribing, ensuring students develop the knowledge and skills required to prescribe safely and effectively in clinical practice. The postholder also plays a key role in assessing competence through formal examinations, including Clinical Case Assessments (CCAs) and the Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA), while providing ongoing feedback and support to facilitate student development.
In addition to undergraduate medical education, the postholder provides induction and training on safe prescribing for new prescribers within the Trust, supporting medicines governance and patient safety objectives. The role also includes acting as Educational Supervisor for trainee pharmacists, leading the development, delivery and quality assurance of the trainee pharmacist programme in line with NHS England and GPhC requirements.
