Senior Clinical Fellow in Renal Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

Senior Clinical Fellow based at LTH on a full time fixed term basis.

Candidates must be registered with the GMC and hold an up-to-date GMC registration document to show fitness to practice.

Working within a supportive and educationally focussed environment, the post-holder will provide registrar-level cover within renal medicine in a teaching hospital with many of the main medical and surgical sub-specialities.

The post would be suitable for doctors with renal experience who are interested in developing their experience and procedural skills in: percutaneous PD catheter insertion, renal biopsy, tunnelled dialysis catheters, vasculitis, glomerulonephritis and post-transplant follow-up clinics.

Main duties of the job

This post is based at the Royal Preston Hospital site and satellite renal centres with allocated session for training in all procedures undertaken in the department. These sessions and opportunities will vary depending on the successful candidate experience, interests and career goals taking into account the service needs.

The renal registrar on call is on-site Monday to Friday 9am-9pm and 9am-7pm at weekends with no out of hours non-resident cover required. Out of hours emergency dialysis is provided by renal nursing staff with agreement for emergency dialysis catheter insertions to be provided by on-site anaesthetic teams. Zero days are rostered to reflect weekend on-call work.

In-patient ward care is divided between 2 teams according to the patient’s named Consultant, with rotation on a monthly basis supported by designated ward registrar cover plus 3 CMTs and 1 FY1.

Working for our organisation

You would join an excellent and well regarded large Renal service that covers a population of 1.8 million people, looking after over 1,500 dialysis and transplant patients across a large geographical area. The ICB includes 4 places (previously referred to as acute trusts) with 6 renal centres in addition to our main hub unit at Royal Preston Hospital.

We work closely in partnership with the highly regarded, North West Kidney Network to further the development of renal services for the benefit of patients. The NWKN is a strong advocate for developing safe and innovative pathways to improve patient care and giving a national platform for the patient voice.

We have an award winning successful live and deceased donor transplant programme and a well-established home dialysis team, offering Peritoneal Dialysis and Home Haemodialysis training at our facility in Chorley and Westmorland General Hospital.  We have an expanding research portfolio recruiting to national trials and undertaking original research within the NIHR badged on-site Lancashire Clinical Research Facility. We offer sub-specialty expertise particularly in vasculitis, frailty and CKD. T
