Main duties of the job
We are a small and friendly team within the field of both Respiratory and Sleep Physiology. In this role you will work closely with the Respiratory Consultants and Head of department to ensure the smooth running of the Respiratory Physiology service.
A key part of your role will be supporting the ongoing development of our staff and service by delivering regular training sessions and maintaining the highest clinical standards. This is a fantastic opportunity to apply your expertise and leadership to drive the Respiratory Physiology service forward, playing an important role in the next phase of the NHS recovery plan.
Additionally, you will support the Sleep Service by actively participating in sleep study analysis and managing the provision of CPAP therapy, helping to ensure our patients receive the best possible care.
Working for our organisation
This post is based at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which provides services across Preston and Chorley Hospitals, and also our Preston Community Diagnostic Centre. This role would therefore require you to travel between sites.
Our Respiratory team is part of the ‘Lancashire Chest Centre’ which offers tertiary services in several sub-specialties of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. You will be joining a thriving team which comprises of 15 Respiratory Consultants across the two hospital sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will play a key role in the delivery of the Respiratory Physiology Service at Preston CDC, Royal Preston and Chorley District Hospital with support from the Head of Department. You will play an active role in supporting the day to day running of the sleep and respiratory physiology services. This will involve setting up and analysis of home sleep studies, initiation and follow up of CPAP therapy and performing full lung function tests.
You will also play a key role in quality assurance and training of junior staff.
The successful candidate must be able to perform a full range of respiratory investigations including spirometry, diffusion, plethysmography, bronchial challenge testing, exercise testing and assessment of sleep disorders and be willing to undertake the challenge of developing these services further.
You will be self-motivated, well organised, have excellent interpersonal skills. You must have a flexible attitude and the willingness to travel between sites.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree in Clinical Physiology, Healthcare Science or equivalent
- RCCP or HCPC registered
- Experience of training and mentoring junior staff
- STP/equivalent experience
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
- ARTP Part 1 and 2
- Leadership and management training (e.g. ILM)
- Mentorship qualification
- Sleep specific qualification (e.g. RPSGT)
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience working within a Respiratory Physiology or Sleep Department
- Ability to work independently within established policies and procedures
- Competent in all aspects of Pulmonary Function Testing
Desirable criteria
- Able to demonstrate experience in service development
- Evidence of research involvement
- Competent in all aspects Sleep diagnostics and CPAP therapy initiation and review
