Specialty Business Manager - Surgery

Band 8a

Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a range of exciting and progressive clinical services in a large, acute provider. The H&N Specialty Business Unit is comprised of ENT, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Special Care & Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry. The service also hosts a regional H&N surgical cancer centre and sits alongside the Rosemere Cancer Centre delivering radiotherapy to the population of Lancashire & South Cumbria.

As the Specialty Business Manager, you will take ownership of the patient pathways within the Specialty units, ensuring that all operational performance targets are closely monitored, tracked, and consistently achieved. In this pivotal role, you will provide strong leadership and effective management to both the performance and capacity teams, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence.

You will work in alignment with the Trust’s corporate objectives, playing an active part in shaping and delivering high-quality health services that meet the needs of patients and the community.

Living the Trust’s values will be at the heart of your role. You will lead by example, fostering a culture where autonomous teams and individuals are empowered, engaged, and motivated. Through your guidance and support, you will help build a committed workforce dedicated to delivering outstanding care with compassion and integrity every day.

Main duties of the job

Your role is to lead and manage the patient pathways within the Specialty Business Units (SBUs), ensuring that available resources are utilised effectively and efficiently to deliver services that meet the highest standards of quality, best practice, and performance targets.

You will oversee a dedicated and diverse team comprising a Specialty Business Manager, a Senior Performance Manager, three Clinical Support Managers, a rota coordinator, two patient pathway coordinators, MDT coordinators, medical secretaries, and administrative assistants. Collaboration is key — from a clinical standpoint, you will work closely and seamlessly with the Clinical Directors and Matrons of each speciality to drive continuous improvement and deliver exceptional patient care.

Working for our organisation

We have 10,000 fantastic people working hard to deliver quality services to our patients.  Whatever your role, you help look after 370,000 people in our local area & give specialist care to 1.5 million people across Lancashire & Cumbria.

Working with us gives you the knowledge and sense of pride that every activity you do genuinely does make a difference to support our patients & staff, ensuring we keep thriving & delivering outstanding healthcare right across our local towns.

You’ll have access to varied development opportunities, learn new skills, meet fab people & do things you’d never have done.  You’ll learn about working in a hospital, interacting with people from all different roles to build skills & enhance your career path.

You’ll make an impact, be challenged to think differently, be bold & help innovate to keep improving things. Everything we do centres around patient care and enhancing their experience which means your role is pivotal and something really to be proud of.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will foster a dynamic culture that encourages initiative, promotes both individual and team responsibility, and supports open and honest communication across all levels.

You will provide effective and supportive line management, empowering your team to perform at their best and develop their skills.
