Hospital Radio Manager

Volunteer role

Job overview

We are looking for our new Station Manager – is it you? We are so proud to be able to broadcast to our patients from our very own studio in the heart of Preston Hospital. This means we can update them on local news, play songs they like, arrange dedications from their loved ones and entertain them with the shows we plan and broadcast ourselves. We have a long history of broadcasting to patients starting way back in the early 50’s and we plan to continue doing just this.

Our studio is facilitated by a small band of dedicated volunteers. We have live broadcasts every day from the studio & also sport broadcasts from external venues, providing bedside entertainment for patients, music, news, sport and dedications.  Our presenters all have their own shows offering a range of listening options for our patients.

You will lead the day-to-day management of our station, engaging with our presenters and ensuring everything runs smoothly.  We want someone to help us continue to progress and modernise the station further as well as recruit more volunteers to join.

We are also keen to work more closely with Chorley Hospital Radio so you will make strong connections with the team there to ensure we have the most effective broadcasting for our patients right across both hospitals.

This is a voluntary position but for the right person it will give you chance to help evolve our radio station, learning new skills/honing existing ones along the way and helping our station continue to thrive.

Main duties of the job

We haven’t had a manager in place for some time, so we’re really looking forward to someone taking the reins.  We are ultimately an NHS hospital radio station so we do operate with clear governance and accountability which has to be adhered to.

Your responsibility will be very varied but will include:

•    Ensure smooth and effective running of the station – dealing with any issues as they arise
•    Supporting current volunteers and engaging them in plans for the station
•    Marketing and building station identity
•    Scheduling of shows
•    Develop more shows for diverse audiences
•    Promote and develop opportunities to interact with patients/staff/visitors to obtain requests and dedications
•    Understanding the data around listener numbers and working to increase them
•    Regular communication and meetings with all stakeholders
•    Oversee external social media and website coverage
•    Keeping abreast with Hospital Radio Broadcasting and other methods to ensure we continue to modernise our station
•    Ensure sound governance in place for managing the station including regular meetings, training and communication cascades with all stakeholders
•    Link with the Station Manager at Chorley Hospital Radio
Ideally, we are looking for someone who can travel to our station should any technical problems arise that need to be sorted, and someone with the ability to help with those technical issues.

Working for our organisation

This is a voluntary position so therefore unpaid – however, we do cover your travel expenses, provide free parking and you will have our bright volunteers uniform.

We have 330+ volunteers right across both hospitals, who give up their time to provide support to our hospitals and the patients we look after.

This is the website for our radio station – so you can have a listen in to see what we do: https://radio-live-uk.com/preston-hospital. This is the website for our wonderful friends at Chorley Hospital Radio too: https://www.chrweb.org.uk/
