Job overview

This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4+ level) in Emergency Medicine at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Emergency Medicine Services at Preston and Chorley are unified under a single Directorate. The successful candidate will be expected to work on both sites.

This post is fixed term for 12 months however candidates seeking less than 12-month contracts are welcome to apply. This is a full-time post however applications from candidates seeking a part time post are welcomed.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include all those duties normally expected of a Senior Clinical Fellow/Speciality Trainee in Emergency Medicine (level 4 and above) in the UK.

Most of the appointee’s time will be spent on clinical duties; however, an integral part of the post will be the supervision and teaching of training grade doctors on the shop floor. In addition, the appointee will be expected to take part in the formal teaching and on-going audit programs within the directorate as well as a full range of management duties commensurate with this role.

The post holder will:

  • Provide primary medical care to patients suffering recent injuries and acute medical and surgical conditions of sudden onset
  • Provide primary care to patients taken ill whilst in transit
  •  Management of the department to maintain efficient and timely patient flow with specific reference to both local set and nationally set targets.
  • Assist consultant staff in maintaining staffing levels including covering short term sickness

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and License to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent (primary medical degree as recognised by the GMC)
  • ALS and APLS
Desirable criteria
  • Higher qualification: MRCEM, FRCS, MRCS, MRCP, FRCA, etc.
  • ATLS or ETC

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 6 years of postgraduate medical experience
  • At least 2 years working in Emergency Medicine
  • At least 6 months working in UK Emergency Medicine at level equivalent to ST4+
Desirable criteria
  • Wider ability in patient evaluation and a working knowledge of minor illnesses and injuries
  • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
