The Pharmacy Department at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTr) is delighted to be able to offer a vacancy for a Full-time (37.5hrs per week) Band 3 Senior Pharmacy Assistant – Supply and Distribution.

We are looking for someone enthusiastic, highly motivated, hardworking and demonstrate a desire to contribute towards developing our services.  Experience of working in a supervisory role would be advantageous as well as an understanding of warehousing and/or pharmacy working practices and proceduresTo be eligible to apply for this position, candidates must:

  • Possess 4 GCSE Passes at Grade C or above (or equivalent) which must include Maths and English.   

  • Have experience of working in a pharmacy and/or a warehousing environment

  • Already have or be working towards a NVQ Level 2 - Pharmacy Services

The core hours of duty are between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm Saturday and Sunday and 9:00am to 5:30pm Bank Holidays.

Main duties of the job

Working under the supervision of the Specialist Pharmacy Technician and Lead Pharmacy Assistant you will play a major role in the supply of medication across not only Lancashire Teaching Hospitals but many external organisations including Pendleside Hospice and St Catherines Hospice. 

Core duties to include (but not limited to):- 

  • Working under supervision of the Stores and Distribution Team Leader/Specialist Pharmacy Technician 

  • Supervising, providing guidance and direction to the Pharmacy Assistants within the designated area 

  • Supporting the training and development of pharmacy personnel, maintaining quality and standards by contributing to the development and implementation of new services, processes and procedures to deliver services in line with professional, local and national directives. 

  • Order assembly 

  • Stock replenishment services to wards and departments 

  • Delivery and dispatch 

  • Stock control and use of the Pharmacy IT System.  

  • Use of the innovative Pharmacy WebTracker.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include but not be limited to: 

  • Approachable, helpful and communicates effectively in a professional and timely manner with both with the Pharmacy Team, Ward Teams and External Customers.
  • Communicates within the role remit and refers all situations outside of this to appropriate pharmacist or technician.
  • Communicates day to day instructions and information to the Pharmacy Assistant Teams.
  • Answers the telephone as per departmental policies and takes messages as required.
  • Takes an active role in service meetings, assisting with minute taking and other clerical duties.   
  • Takes personal responsibility to read minutes/Team Brief/Trust Bulletins and encourages this within the entire team
  • Receives feedback from patients/service users/team members.
  • Communicates with people in a form and manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture, background and preferred ways of communicating.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times and communicates in line with relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Ensures that supply problems are communicated to the relevant departments.
  • Completes all relevant documentation accurately adhering to legislation, policies and procedures
  • Constructively manage barriers to effective communication
  • Deals with any complaints and feedback the outcome in a timely manner
  • Maintains accurate and complete records consistent with legislation, procedures and policies.
  • To liaise with the Procurement Team to chase outstanding orders and to order relevant transport/collections.
  • Chairs the weekly team meeting in the absence of the Senior Pharmacy Technicians
  • Carries out Pharmaceutical duties under the direct supervision of an appropriately qualified Pharmacist and/or Technician in all areas of Pharmacy.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 4 GCSE Passes Grade C or above (or equivalent) (Maths and English & science)
  • Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Support Staff (Qualification) or equivalent Or A General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) accredited support staff dispensing training course Or working towards either of the above
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership/ Management Certificate

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Experience of working in pharmacy
  • Knowledge of stock control systems
  • Good telephone/ communication skills
  • Computer experience including good keyboard skills
  • Knowledge of Health & safety
  • Experience in the use of Pharmacy IT Systems
  • Knowledge of Good Distribution Practice and MHRA Guidelines
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of using Ascribe and ARX
  • Experience in Supervisory Management and Team Leadership
