Job overview

The post holder will be based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan. The junior medical staff on the wards are responsible for the care of Cardiology patients under supervision of the specialty doctors and consultants in Cardiology. 

This role is advertised as fixed term contract October 2025 until August 2026.

The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Review referrals to the service daily in liaison with Consultants.
  • Assist in clinics as necessary, seeing both new and follow-up patients.
  • Attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Ward rounds.
  • Continuing professional development.
  • Providing support during periods of absence of Consultants.
  • Maintain good communication with all consultants and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Work with FY1 and FY2 in the treatment of patients admitted, undertake and supervise medical procedures as requested.
  • Ensure good communication with GP’s and other agencies such as Palliative Care services.
  • Participation in teaching and training activities for medical and other clinical staff.
  • Teaching of junior medical staff, medical students and nurses will be expected.
  • The Trust encourages proposals for research projects.

  • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team.
  • Evidence of personal initiative and organisational abilities.
  • Ability to keep good clinical records.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to carry out ALS and defibrillation to a standard that accords with UK Resus Council guidelines.
  • Experience at SHO level (or equivalent) in General and / or Respiratory Medicine.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Qualification – MB BS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • ALS or equivalent
