Job overview

We are looking to recruit a Staff Nurse to our busy Ophthalmology Out-Patient Department based in the community at Boston house Wigan.

We provide a wide variety of ophthalmic services to the local community, including general clinics, laser treatments, sight saving injections, urgent referral clinics, minor surgery and pre-operative assessments amongst many others.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to experience the varied clinics and specialist services we provide as part of a dedicated ophthalmic team

Experience of ophthalmology is preferred but not essential as in department training will be given. 

Main duties of the job

Under the supervision of the department managers the nurse will be responsible for the provision, organisation and direction of nursing care .

Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and high quality care is provided to our patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

General nursing duties and setting up of clinics.

Ensuring a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.

Assessment of patient visual acuity.

Patient observations.

Assisting with treatments and procedures.

Clear and accurate documentation, written and electronic.

Supervision of junior staff and students.

Attending and contributing to staff meetings and audits.

Keeping up to date with mandatory training.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Current NMC registration or due to register within 2 months
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching and Assessing
  • Specialist skills course
  • Study to degree or diploma level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working independently and as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Ophthalmic experience
  • Post qualification experience
  • Experience of research and audit

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • A good standard of written and spoken English
  • Ability to maintain and improve standards of care.
  • Able to challenge unacceptable behaviour or practice in a professional context.
  • Computer skills
Desirable criteria
  • Cannulation
  • Phlebotomy

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice
  • Understanding of research/audit
  • Recent evidence of continuing professional development.
