Job overview

The Lead Cardiac Radiographer provides leadership and management of the radiographic service within the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality, safe, and effective service for diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures. The role leads a team of Band 6 and Band 7 Cardiac Radiographers, oversees clinical governance, quality assurance, training, audit, and service development, and drives innovation to ensure the service remains aligned with best practice, technological advancements, and organisational objectives. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams and external partners, the post holder ensures excellence in patient care and radiographic practice.

Main duties of the job

Lead and manage the Cardiac Catheter Lab radiography service, ensuring a high-quality, efficient, and safe imaging service in line with professional standards. Provide clinical, professional, and operational leadership to the Cardiac Radiography team, including management of Band 6 and Band 7 staff. Perform and oversee specialised cardiac imaging procedures, including the assessment of complex coronary conditions and interpretation of cardiac images. Support the development of the Cardiac Catheter Labs, contributing to service planning, innovation, and continuous improvement. Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, governance requirements, and quality standards relating to cardiac imaging. Monitor service performance through audit, data analysis, and management of BCIS/NICOR data to drive quality improvement and achieve key performance indicators. Maintain responsibility for the safe operation, maintenance, and quality assurance of cardiac imaging equipment. Provide education, training, and mentorship to radiography staff and student radiographers. Maintain advanced clinical expertise and continuing professional development, acting as a specialist resource within cardiac imaging. Support the Cardiology General Manager and senior leadership team in meeting current service demands and planning future service developments while working with a high degree of autonomy and professional accountability.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  •  The post holder will be an experienced Cardiac Radiographer with a proven technical, leadership and human resources background.
  • The post holder will have evidence of continuing education, relevant clinical qualifications as well as evidence of a Continuous Professional Development portfolio. In addition, the post holder will have evidence of achieving post graduate education/qualification at master’s level or equivalent experience.
  • To provide an efficient and effective Cardiac Catheter Lab imaging service for recognising professional standards.
  • The post holder will be an expert in the field of Cardiac imaging, experientially, clinically and managerially and should be able to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Demonstrate leadership within the Cardiac Catheter Labs at WWL.
  • The post holder will support the vision and strategic service developments of WWL and its impact on the Cardiac Catheter Labs to ensure the continuous provision of a specialist service.
  • The post holder will ensure that all external and internal policies and procedures pertinent to Cardiac imaging will be actioned.
  • The post holder will maintain their own clinical expertise within the Cardiac Catheter Labs
  • The post holder will maintain an accurate and updated Continuous Professional Development portfolio to reflect the roles and responsibilities of the post
  • Competent in assessing a range of complex coronary conditions, tailoring diagnostic protocols for specified conditions
  • The post holder will be responsible for determining the most relevant data and information to allow analysis of the Cardiac Catheter Lab imaging service which will bring about service improvement.
  • The post holder will use their clinical and managerial experience to influence the gathering of the correct and relevant data to effect positive change.
  • The post holder will effectively manage the Band 7 and Band 6 Cardiac radiographers to ensure that all Key Performance indicators are met on a continual basis.
  • Ensure all items of equipment pertinent to Cardiac Imaging are maintained and serviced according to manufacturer’s requirements.
  • Visual skills – highly specialised in coronary image interpretation. Able to assess and manipulate digital images using diagnostic software.
  •  Overall general good health, stamina and ability to work under pressure for long periods of time and fluctuating workload which can be in unpleasant working conditions. Manipulate complex and expensive equipment with minimal margins of error.
  • Responsible for BCIS/NICOR audit data, to ensure uploading and data validation as per the NICOR guidelines.
  • Provision of training for student radiographers within department – in conjunction with Salford University.
  • The dual role of Superintendent and lead Cardiac radiographer with managerial and clinical commitments is to support the Cardiology General Manager and senior management team to meet current service requirements and to provide vision and plan for future service developments,
  • Accountability for their own actions and the ability to act independently is an essential and crucial part of this role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Radiography or D.C.R.(Diagnostic)
  • Evidence of Masters level study/qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate studies/qualification in any other related modality
  • Designated Radiation Protection Supervisor
  • Any other further studies relevant to the role

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience in Complex Interventional procedures
  • Experience with adjunct imaging systems
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Confident with complex Data analysis ,BCIS /NICOR Audit software
  • Experience in management of workforce and an appreciation of financial resources
  • Experience of managing clinical governance and audit processes.
