Clinical Scientist Microbiology

NHS AfC: Band 7

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for an HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist to join our close-knit team in the UHL Department of Clinical Microbiology. In this position, you will have a central role in innovation and service development as we implement high-throughput automation and sequencing-based diagnostics to develop a modern and efficient clinical microbiology service.

This opportunity is especially suited to an individual with experience in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics for microbial genomics, and metagenomics.

UHL Clinical Microbiology serves one of the UK's largest teaching hospital trusts and primary care services covering a population of over 1 million people with high levels of ethnic diversity and a wide range of socioeconomic conditions, resulting in a unique and diverse profile of infectious diseases, and consequently a varied an interesting role for our Microbiology Clinical Scientists.

Main duties of the job

UHL works in partnership with NHS trusts in Northamptonshire, and the Clinical Microbiology service is embedded within the East Midlands Pathology Network (EMPN), providing the post holder with exciting collaborative opportunities to shape the future of infection diagnostics provision locally and across the region.

Research is prominent in UHL Clinical Microbiology, where we deliver NIHR, academic and industry funded research projects in novel diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, respiratory infections and migrant health.

In this role, you will assist in the development and delivery of a quality-driven, cost-effective, patient-focused service. Including:

  • Identification of priorities for the improvement of the Clinical Microbiology service through the development, evaluation and validation of innovative diagnostic approaches, with a particular emphasis on molecular diagnostics and microbial genomics.
  • Provision and verification of Clinical Microbiology services, particularly those relating to molecular diagnostics, microbial genomics and novel technology.
  • Interpretation, authorisation and reporting of the results of microbiological investigations, providing advice where appropriate.
  • Participation in research, development and innovation activities, supporting collaborations across UHL, local universities and national innovation networks such as the NHS Respiratory Metagenomics Network.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
