Employer heading
Education Teaching/ Surgical Teaching Fellow
NHS Medical & Dental: Core or Specialty Trainee CT1/2 or ST3-5
AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.
But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.
Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:
- might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
- often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
- could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience
We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.
Job overview
Open to UHL/UHN candidates only
Applicants must have a minimum of 12 months experience of delivering care in the NHS.
The Education Teaching Fellow/ Surgical Teaching Fellow posts are designed to develop the career of clinicians with an interest in leadership and medical education. The posts offer development opportunities in medical education for 12 months before the Fellow returns to training/clinical work in their own specialty.
Successful applicants will be offered either an Education Teaching Fellow post or a Surgical Teaching Fellow post, dependent on their career aspirations and interest. Please read the job description for each role and indicate, in your supporting information which role you would prefer to be considered for.
Applicants for either role must be able to demonstrate an established interest in medical education, for example through previous teaching or postgraduate qualifications.
Please indicate your preference for jobs in the supporting information section; you will only be considered for the roles you specify. If you are happy with either role, please specify your choices in rank order.
Interviews will be held 28th April, 1st May and 6th May
Main duties of the job
All Fellows will be involved in medical education project work and undergraduate teaching.
The Education Teaching Fellow role has more focus on education projects and research with some bedside teaching for Phase 1 (year 2 students).
The Surgical Teaching Fellow principally supports Year 3 undergraduate teaching and will be a combination of informal bedside teaching and more formal tutorial/seminar based teaching. There will be some opportunities to undertake project work.
Both roles will offer opportunities to
· Facilitate simulation-based teaching.
· Get involved in assessment activities – acting as a clinical tutor/examiner in formative OSCEs and helping to examine in summative examinations, for which training will be provided.
· Gain some experience of standard setting for examinations and writing examination questions/cases.
While much of the learning will be experiential, it will be supported by a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education or Leadership. Time and resources (up to a set value) will be provided to facilitate this.
·
Working for our organisation
Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).
We have four primary goals:
- high-quality care for all,
- being a great place to work,
- partnerships for impact, and
- research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.
Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
- we are compassionate,
- we are proud,
- we are inclusive, and
- we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
