Renal Staff Nurse

NHS AfC: Band 5

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

Ward 30 at Glenfield Hospital is a specialised renal unit providing high-quality care for patients with acute and chronic kidney conditions. The ward supports individuals undergoing haemodialysis, as well as patients with complex renal needs requiring close monitoring and intervention. In addition, the ward includes Level 2 beds for the management of acutely unwell renal patients who require enhanced observation and clinical support.

As a Staff Nurse on Ward 30, you will have experience in renal dialysis care or have an interest in developing renal dialysis skills. You will play a key role in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care within a dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team. You will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients with a wide range of renal conditions, including those receiving dialysis and those with acute kidney injury or complications of chronic kidney disease.

The role involves developing specialist skills in renal nursing, including dialysis management, fluid balance monitoring, and the care of patients requiring higher levels of clinical support. You will also contribute to the management of deteriorating patients in Level 2 beds, working closely with medical staff and outreach teams to ensure timely escalation and intervention.

Main duties of the job

Please note: Applicants must have a 12 months post-registration NHS experience as a qualified Registered Nurse in an acute clinical setting. Applications from newly qualified nurses will not be considered for this post.

  • The post holder will be expected to demonstrate strong communication skills, compassion, and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy clinical environment. A commitment to delivering high-quality care and improving patient outcomes is essential.

  • Deliver high-quality, safe, and effective nursing care to patients with acute and chronic renal conditions.

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans for patients, ensuring needs are met in a timely and compassionate manner.

  • Provide care for patients receiving haemodialysis, including monitoring during treatment and recognising and responding to complications.

  • Manage patients with acute kidney injury and complex renal conditions, including those requiring Level 2 care and enhanced monitoring.

  • Accurately monitor and record observations, fluid balance, and clinical parameters, taking appropriate action in response to deterioration.

  • Recognise and escalate concerns using appropriate tools and protocols, working closely with medical and outreach teams.

  • Administer medications safely in accordance with Trust policies, including intravenous therapies and renal-specific medications

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
