Locum Consultant in Obstetrics

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

Locum Consultant in Obstetrics

The appointment will be whole time.  Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post.  If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues.

BASE

Your normal place of work will be as discussed at interview and will be confirmed in Section 1 of your contract but you may be required to work in other locations of the Trust. In particular, flexibility is required across the three main Hospital sites (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital, Glenfield Hospital).  If your initial location is based at one of these sites, excess travel reimbursement will not apply for a permanent/temporary change to base.

Main duties of the job

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST

The department is looking for a dynamic and energetic Obstetrician for a fixed term of 12 months to contribute to our Tertiary level obstetrics service at University Hospitals of Leicester, NHS Trust.

  • To provide a weekly antenatal clinic
  • To participate in the acute obstetric service at UHL, including Maternity Assessment Unit, ward rounds, Caesarean section lists
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff.
  • Undertake sessions on the Delivery Suite i.e. participate in the hot week, and work closely with midwifery and other colleagues to engender a supportive and mutually respectful atmosphere.
  • Take part in multidisciplinary case discussions and care planning.
  • Teaching, complaint and incident management and administration.
  • To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
  • To contribute to ongoing research activities at UHL. To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job Plan

The Job Plan  will be subject to annual review, with any revisions sought by mutual agreement but it is expected that the successful candidate will work with the CMG management team to ensure services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future

The job plan runs over a nine week period and consists of 2 types of working week:

  • Hot Week Delivery Suite Cover
  • Core job plan

The Consultants work in teams. The teams provide prospective cover for clinics, MAU and elective Caesarean section lists. Therefore there has to be a degree of flexibility for these sessions.
