Job overview
The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust wishes to appoint a highly motivated Band 7 Clinical Scientist within the Department of Nuclear Medicine.
This role will be based at Northampton General Hospital in the provision of a Nuclear Medicine scientist service for University Hospitals Northamptonshire (UHN).
The successful applicant is expected to be a registered Clinical Scientist, ideally with some experience across all areas of Nuclear Medicine.
The UHN Nuclear Medicine service is provided over 2 sites, Northampton General Hospital (NGH) and Kettering General Hospital (KGH). It covers a wide range of diagnostic tests and therapeutic studies.
There are 4 gamma cameras across the 2 sites; 1 dedicated cardiac, 1 standard gamma camera and 2 others with CT capability . There is an onsite Radiopharmacy at NGH. The molecular radiotherapy service includes iodine ablation therapy, thyrotoxicosis therapy and Xofigo.
The department participates in clinical research trials. PET-CT is provided at NGH by Alliance Medical Ltd for which UHL currently provide RPA, RWA and MPE services.
There will be full support from and access to the Nuclear Medicine team at UHL, including the Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics, Specialist Clinical Scientists and Clinical Scientists. There would be flexibility for time to spend in Nuclear Medicine at UHL for expansion of knowledge and management support, including meetings and CPD. This may involve onsite visits to UHL and remote working.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will prioritise and manage their own work to provide scientific support to the service. The post holder will apply a broad range of scientific skills, knowledge and experience in Nuclear Medicine and will liaise closely with the scientific, medical, technical, nursing and other staff to deliver an effective diagnostic and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Maintain and develop Nuclear Medicine instrumentation, procedures and computing facilities
Provide advice and assistance to clinicians and other staff on issues relating to Nuclear Medicine
Ensure instrument quality assurance and the quality control programmes are correctly carried out, ensure equipment is operating correctly and carry out fault finding to resolve equipment problems
Dispense and administer radionuclide therapy to patients and assist with the development of patient therapy services
Assist with the maintenance and development of common procedures and protocols
Liaise with the RPA and RPS staff to ensure day to day work meets the requirements of relevant radiation legislation

- Good Honours Degree in Physics or equivalent MSc in Medical Physics or relevant qualification or experience

- Registered as a Clinical Scientist in Medical Physics (or working towards such a registration)

- Solid knowledge of fundamental Physics and Nuclear Medicine principles
- Significant experience of implementing Nuclear Medicine principles in practice.
- Practical experience with a wide range of Nuclear Medicine equipment.
- Knowledge of wider clinical issues and their implications for Nuclear Medicine diagnosis and therapy
- Understanding patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure.
- Working understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, including: IRR, IR(ME)R, EPR 2016
- Able to use spreadsheet applications (e.g. MS-Excel) to store and analyse complex datasets
- Able to use word-processing applications (e.g. MS-Word) to produce professional reports and other documents
Desirable criteria
- Specific experience of the following areas would be highly desirable: Radiopharmacy Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Positron Emission Tomography Programming and system modification skills in Nuclear Medicine computer systems.

Skills

- Highly developed physical accuracy and dexterity, for making precision measurements and adjustments on equipment and for manipulating liquid and solid radioactive materials
- Able to lift medium/heavy weights (eg lead shielding)
- Able to concentrate for prolonged periods, and when subject to frequent unpredictable working patterns
Desirable criteria
- Experience of Radiopharmacy production and / or dosedispensing would be desirable
