Job overview

The Speech and Language Team (SaLT) work as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering a high-quality specialist services to individuals with Learning Disabilities.

This role will work across Learning Disabilities to meet the communication and dysphagia needs of this client group. You will be a person-centred SaLT who is committed to advocating for and meeting the needs of Adults with a Learning Disability.

You will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide specialist assessment to adults with speech, language and communication needs. You will need to be a skilled assessor who can create specialist speech and language therapy treatment plans support, care plans and interventions that are co-produced with the people you support. You will use clear evidence-based practice to meet the person's needs, with identified clinical effectiveness and outcome measures. You will be required to support and supervise junior staff, and students within the service. You will need excellent communication skills that are adaptable to each person's needs.    

We may be able to consider a B5 application with dysphagia competencies.

Main duties of the job

If you are a dedicated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist, who is keen to learn, we can support you to tailor your current clinical skills to working in this role. You will have access to regular caseload and clinical supervision, plus a meaningful annual appraisal that supports you to plan and achieve goals.

The people that we support are individuals and our approach is always person-centred. Working autonomously, the role will be varied and include assessment, planning and implementing evidence-based practice, reviewing and evaluating therapy using therapy outcome measures, provide advice to other professionals regarding the management of clients with communication and dysphagia needs, modifying materials, attending and contributing to MDT and clinical team meetings, report writing and completing administrative tasks relevant to the role.

You must have a Speech and Language degree qualification and be registered with the HCPC. Membership to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists is desirable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
  • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
  • Evidence of specialised continued professional development in speech and language therapist
  • Evidence of meeting standards of HCPC
Desirable criteria
  • Management training
  • Leadership Training
  • Post basic Dysphagia training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with children, young people or adults with an Intellectual Disability and/or Autism with complex needs
  • Experience of delivering training on speech and language therapy related topics to patients, carers, colleagues
  • Experience of leading on service related projects
  • Experience of supervising junior staff and/or students
  • Knowledge and application of different assessments and therapeutic approaches for communication needs in adults with Intellectual Disabilities and/or Autism
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with children, young people or adults with Autism, Mental Health and Behaviour Needs
  • Evidence of clinical supervision of others
  • Attends Clinical Excellence Networks relevant to current role
  • Attended Makaton training
  • Attended training on communication strategies such as Talking Mats, Intensive Interaction, Communication Passports
  • Experience of electronic communication aids e.g. iPad

  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of team

  • Knowledge of Learning Disabilities national agendas including NICE guidance and the Transforming care agenda
  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act, Best interest process and Deprivation of Liberty Guidance
