Job overview

Acknowledged within the Trust as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in a specified clinical field.
Working as part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) the Colposcopy Nurse will act as an autonomous, professional clinical practitioner. They will be responsible for providing a specialist nursing service within 
the area of gynaecology. 
With an in-depth knowledge of gynaecological nursing practice, the post-holder will act as a Specialist 
Nurse Colposcopist and advanced practitioner demonstrating advanced knowledge and skills in cervical screening. 
The post holder will report to the Matron to ensure they contribute to divisional and trust strategic service development plans.
The focus of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role is on direct clinical care and is there to support services through the provision of extended nursing care that is underpinned by strong academic qualifications. The Clinical Nurse Specialist is afforded greater autonomy within their role and the care they provide should respond to patient’s / client expectations.

Main duties of the job


• Directly delivers care based on current evidence to their own caseload, across a variety of settings, e.g. in-patient ward, out-patient clinic,  to provide a service that is responsive to the needs of his/her client group.
• Trust wide role providing support and specialist nursing advice to clinical colleagues in complex cases.
• Improves the care of patients within their clinical field by improving the knowledge and skills of firstline staff through education 
• Undertakes audit.
• With in-depth knowledge of gynaecological nursing practice
and skills in cervical screening.
• To provide expert professional advice to patients, carers and colleagues.
• To develop and maintain effective communication with patients, other health care professionals, GP’s and practice nurses, ensuring the delivery of a  patient focused service.
• To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
• To facilitate effective communication links with MDT teams and external agencies.
• Assess, plan, provide and evaluate specialist clinical nursing care to meet the care needs of patient 
• To act as the patient’s advocate when relevant, when informed decision may lead to choices being made concerning treatment options.
• Maintain up to date knowledge of contemporary clinical practice, research and professional guidance

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Level 1 Registered Nurse
  • First Level Degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
  • Meets NMC revalidation standards
  • Evidence of in-depth experience in relevant field and/or postgraduate study
Desirable criteria
  • Management Qualification

Knowledge Training Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 years current experience within the field at Band 5/6 equivalent
  • Experience in diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopy clinics.
  • Assessment and history taking skills
  • Previous involvement in the development, implementation and audit of clinical guidelines and standards
  • Effective leadership and assertiveness skills
Desirable criteria
  • Management experience at ward level
  • Previous involvement in change management
  • Published articles
