Job overview

The Lead Business Insight Analyst role is a senior member of the Business Insights team and is responsible for implementing advanced data science methodologies and supporting data-driven decision-making across clinical and operational areas. Reporting to the Head of Business Insight, the postholder will focus on the implementation and optimisation of analytics models and frameworks to enhance the Group’s strategic planning capabilities.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will create and optimise data modelling architecture and developed machine learning pipelines for scalable deployment. Statistical methods will be used and applied to analyse healthcare data, developing accurate models for trend analysis, forecasting, and outcome measurement. The postholder will collaborate with stakeholders to convert business needs into technical solutions, producing structured and insightful reports for effective decision-making.

The postholder will work closely with Care Group leads, translating service priorities into detailed operational plans. They will analyse service developments, review business cases, and develop capacity models that provide a clear view of short- and long-term service requirements. Performance forecasting and trajectory modelling are key complementary activities that ensure alignment with NHS performance targets.

The role will involve supporting executive-level ad-hoc requests, providing specialist analytics expertise, and contributing to the development of a portfolio of Business Intelligence tools. The post holder will work as an active member of the Information Management Senior Leadership Team, collaborating to achieve departmental objectives while promoting professional development and compliance with NHS standards.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Information Management, Data Science, Business Intelligence, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in Healthcare Data Management, Analytics, or a related discipline
  • Relevant professional qualifications in Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, SQL certification)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (e.g., courses in leadership, management, or technical expertise related to Data Science/Statistics)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Detailed knowledge of healthcare data and how to navigate healthcare data to provide answers to support key operational planning decisions
  • Sound knowledge base of the NHS, the current issues, its values and principles of timely local access for the population
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of national policy, the NHS long term plan, NHS priorities and national planning guidance
  • Knowledge of clinical governance

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to coherently present analytical planning findings to senior stakeholders, including senior clinicians
  • Experience of using internal / external benchmarking data to identify efficiency opportunities
Desirable criteria
  • Significant relevant experience within an acute NHS hospital organisation within a relevant role
  • Significant experience of delivering complex strategic planning and forecasting solutions
  • Proven experience in project management and leading complex, multi faceted management systems relating to performance delivery and/or operational planning
  • Experience of risk management

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Exceptionally high level of numeracy, analytical skills and ability in health-based modelling
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to design, develop, and implement scalable data solutions
  • Proficiency in Data Science tools and programming languages for data interrogation and analysis
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, able to translate complex data insights into actionable information for diverse audiences
  • Capability to work collaboratively with stakeholders, understanding their needs, and aligning solutions accordingly
  • Strong IT skills, particularly in the use of Microsoft Office applications, databases, and data science tools
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality outputs
