Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and well-motivated Biomedical Scientist/Trainee Biomedical Scientist to join the Microbiology team at Path Links, Scunthorpe General Hospital. The laboratory is equipped with a variety of analysers including the BioMerieux BacT/Alert, BioMerieux Vitek, Cepheid GeneXpert, Roche Cobas 5800, Qiagen Qiastat and Beckman Coulter iQ200.

The laboratory delivers a range of investigations, is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189:2012 and is an IBMS approved training laboratory.

You will work as part of the Microbiology team to provide a high-quality service while adhering to the Trust values of Compassion, Honesty, Respect and Teamwork.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a Biomedical Scientist performing a range of microbiological techniques to assist in the clinical diagnosis of microbiological disease. They will rotate through all sections of Microbiology and Serology.

Following training, the post holder will be expected to participate in the 24/7 shift rota which will include working weekends, bank holidays and night shifts.

You will assist the Deputy Laboratory Managers with tasks such as supervision, training and maintaining UKAS accreditation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Perform routine and specialist investigations in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.

Participate in the 24/7 shift rota which includes lone working.

Identify and interpret abnormal results.

Answer telephone requests and advise service users regarding suitability of sample and requests.

Rectify problems within their remit and refer to supervisor as appropriate.

Supervision of Trainee BMS and Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA), allocating work where needed.

Comply with safety procedures at all times and be able to recognize potential hazards to themselves and others and rectify or report these in a timely manner.

Adhere to the HCPC standards for Biomedical Scientists, always maintaining a professional attitude.

Occupational Experience

Essential criteria
  • 1 year NHS laboratory experience.
  • 2-3 years NHS lab experience
  • >4 years NHS lab experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of broad range of manual methods conducted within a Microbiology laboratory
  • Experience of broad range of analysers used within a Microbiology laboratory
  • Experience of broad range of serological and molecular methods used within a Microbiology laboratory
