Job overview
The Personal Academic Tutors (2 roles) each attract 1 Programmed Activity (PA) per week for three years, subject to annual review. This rewarding role is an excellent opportunity to guide and support UCL medical students in a holistic way and help them feel a part of the Whittington as they transition to clinical years.
The post holder will work closely with central UCL, the Deputy Divisional Tutor and the UCLMS Professional Services Team with regular meetings to discuss any challenges or students in difficulty.
Our Personal Academic Tutors (PAT) are an extremely important point of contact for our medical students. All MBBS students is allocated a named personal tutor who will be the ‘go-to’ person for any questions, queries, or guidance that students need during the course.
Main duties of the job
Personal Tutors will be expected to take on 50 students for 1PA of time, or 25 students for 0.5PA of job planned time. Their role will include general pastoral and academic support of their students, including:
• One group meeting at the beginning of Year 4 for introduction and expectation setting.
• At least one 1:1 meeting with the student per term either in person1 or on Teams and we encourage Personal Academic Tutors to have one half day “clinic” per week to see students for 20-minute appointments, (in negotiation with the student) and to keep in email contact.
To briefly record the outcome of the meeting on the student’s Academic Student Record
• To briefly record the outcome of the meeting on the student’s Academic Student Record (ASR)
• Monitoring of students’ progress throughout the year.
• To review the students’ exam results on the ASR and meet with any student who are unsuccessful in the summative assessments, to provide support for their resit attempt.
• To complete references for students, as requested, including the Foundation Programme reference in Year 6.
• To liaise with UCLMS Office of the Divisional Tutor, to discuss any students of concern and identify any students who are not engaging with their tutor.
Working for our organisation
The Trust is currently exploring ways in which patients can be given more choice about when they can attend appointments at the hospital. In order to make this possible there may be a future requirement for administrative staff scheduling appointments for patients to contact them by telephone in the evenings or at weekends. This means that administrative staff may be required to work a shift pattern in future. Shifts will not normally operate beyond 9 pm in the evenings and appropriate pay enhancements will apply. Staff will be consulted about the introduction of / changes to shift systems.
Staff working in any department where an on 'call rota' operates will be required to participate in the rota. Managers will discuss with staff the level of 'on call' cover required taking into account their individual circumstances.
Staff in nursing posts may be requested to work in any area throughout the Trust by the matron or the site manager.
