Job overview
We are seeking to appoint a substantive consultant in General Paediatrics with a special interest in Child Safeguarding, as the postholder will contribute to CMPE supervision and other Safeguarding
work.
The proposed job plan is annualised based on a 42-week working year. The working pattern will include duties covering paediatric ward for attending weeks, Ward & ED when on call, outpatient clinics & out of
hours cover. Each activity has a tariff in terms of PAs e.g., an outpatient clinic provides 1.25 PAs.
Main duties of the job
This post will participate in 1:12 weekday and weekend on call rota. The department is working towards achieving the 14hr standard and Consultants will be expected to cover paediatric assessment unit and
A&E and be resident onsite till 9 PM during weekday on calls and 6pm for weekends.
The Paediatric Department consists of a Children’s Ward (24 beds), Pluto day unit (6 beds) and Paediatric outpatient clinic. The department also provides Level 1 POSCU services at this site. The Level 2 Neonatal Unit has 30 cots, 4 of which are equipped for intensive care, 6 High Dependency and a 4-bed transitional care ward.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- On the specialist register of the General Medical Council (GMC) for Paediatrics
- Registered with the GMC
- Membership of relevant Royal College Of Paediatrics & Child Health / equivalent
- Level 3 Child Protection training
Desirable criteria
- APLS/NLS Instructor
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Broad Experience in general paediatrics at Consultant or SpR level
- Demonstrable knowledge of the challenges facing the service
- Demonstrable knowledge of the environment in which the service needs to be delivered
- Experience in undertaking Child Protection Medical Examinations
- Ability to take independent and full responsibility of clinical care of paediatric patients
Desirable criteria
- Safeguarding SPIN (Special Interest) or equivalent training
