Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Matron to join our inpatient team within Croydon Directorate.

The post holder will lead and be responsible for the delivery of high quality care and patient experience within the acute inpatient setting through proactive clinical and professional leadership to nursing/non-nursing staff at all levels within their clinical area of responsibility.

The post holder will need to ensure the delivery of high quality, evidence based, compassionate, person-centred care and ensure that care delivered is in a safe and clean environment.

 

 

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting post that allows for close working and collaboration with senior management and clinicians in the future development of the directorate.  The inpatient matron will be an integral part of the Nursing, Quality and Assurance Team. 

The successful candidates will have exceptional communication, motivational and influencing skills being able to influence and encourage teams to work across organisational boundaries whilst holding patient care at the heart of their work.

The candidates will need to be passionate about the delivery of high quality patient care and have experience in leadership. The post holder will be a ‘self-starter’ and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a multi professional team.

The post holder will deliver on the Matron’s 10 Key Responsibilities;

  • Leading by example
  • Making sure patients get quality care
  • Ensuring staffing is appropriate to patient needs
  • Empowering nurses to take on a wider range of clinical service
  • Improving hospital cleanliness
  • Ensuring patients’ nutritional needs are met
  • Improving wards for patients (to include supporting ward in identification of ligatures and management plan regarding existing ligatures)
  • Making sure patients are treated with respect
  • Preventing hospital-acquired infection
  • Resolving problems for patients and their relatives by building closer relationships

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)/ Registered Nurse with a first degree in nursing or relevant field.
  • • Extensive post- registration continuing professional development in relevant or related clinical field.
  • • Practice supervisor training
Desirable criteria
  • • Master’s degree or equivalent
  • • Training in physical health care, including wound care.
  • • Training in Quality Improvement methodology

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of the current policy context and the implications for mental health nursing, relevant to acute adults’ services
  • • Knowledge and understanding of Care Quality Commissions (CQC) standards and the quality Improvement agenda for the directorate.
  • • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and policies associated with Mental Health Care
  • • Understanding of clinical risks and ways of supporting teams in managing risks proactively
  • • An appreciation of the unique needs of patients from diverse cultural communities
