Bioinformatician

Civil Service: Grade 7

The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is a system leader for health security; taking action internationally to strengthen global health security, providing trusted advice to government and the public and reducing inequalities in the way different communities experience and are impacted by infectious disease, environmental hazards, and other threats to health.

UKHSA’s remit, as an agency with a global-to-local reach, is to protect the health of the nation from infectious diseases and other external threats to health. As the nation’s expert national health security agency UKHSA will:

  • Prevent: anticipate threats to health and help build the nation’s readiness, defences and health security
  • Detect: use cutting edge environmental and biological surveillance to proactively detect and monitor infectious diseases and threats to health
  • Analyse: use world-class science and data analytics to assess and continually monitor threats to health, identifying how best to control and mitigate the risks
  • Respond: take rapid, collaborative and effective actions nationally and locally to mitigate threats to health when they materialise
  • Lead: lead strong and sustainable global, national, regional and local partnerships designed to save lives, protect the nation from public health threats and reduce inequalities.

Job overview

This post will focus on helping shape and deliver the objectives of the Genomics Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) as set out in its yearly Forward Business Plan.

This bioinformatics role within the genomics HPRU will work with partners at UKHSA to develop methods which allow complex whole genome sequence data to be used as an input into AI and deep learning methodologies. In the first instance the theme will focus on Tuberculosis mycobacterium antimicrobial resistance, but there will be opportunities to expand approaches to other human pathogens. This role will also provide bioinformatics support for other whole genome sequencing analysis projects within themes 2 and 3, these are likely to include phylogenetic, AMR and SNP analysis of both viral and bacterial pathogens. A key aim of the genomics HPRU is the translation of methodology into UKHSA routine sequencing activity, therefore this post holder will also work with the Bioinformatics division to ensure that methodologies and tools are compatible with deployment as part of routine WGS processing.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will develop bioinformatics and public health informatics for the Genomics HPRU:

  • Provide bioinformatics expertise and insight into projects and proposals put forward as part of the Genomics HPRU
  •  Design and validate bioinformatics tools, pipelines, and methods suitable for analysis and comparison of the genome sequences generated at UKHSA and elsewhere.
  • Compile, in appropriate databases and formats, complex data arising from whole-genome sequencing (WGS) from a range of pathogens.
  • Undertake analysis on data arising from WGS, in particular for the validation of proposed methods and techniques.

To support delivery of the objectives of the Genomics Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) as set out in its yearly Forward Business Plan, including:

  • Liaise with the HPRU directors and other scientists involved in order to develop and deliver the main goals of the yearly Forward Business Plan and provide expert support and leadership.
  • Assist with developing and updating the yearly Forward Business Plan
  • Work with other bioinformaticians and academics in the Genomics HPRU  and at UKHSA on designing, implementing, and validating efficient bioinformatics pipelines suitable for analysis and comparative genomics of relevant pathogen sequences.
