Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly skilled Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Cornea to join Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust within the North Division.
This exciting full-time locum opportunity offers the chance to play a key role in establishing and leading a new corneal service across our Stratford and Brent Cross sites, delivering high-quality specialist care to patients with corneal and external eye disease.
The successful candidate will provide consultant-led corneal outpatient and theatre services, undertake clinical assessment and management of new and follow-up patients, support referral triage, participate in clinical audit and governance activities, and contribute to teaching, research and service development within one of the world's leading ophthalmic institutions.
This post offers 9.13 Programmed Activities (7.13 clinical, 1 Supporting Professional Activities and 1 associated administration) with no on-call commitment, providing an excellent opportunity to develop and shape a growing service while working alongside a well-established team of expert corneal consultants.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will play a key role in establishing and developing a new corneal service across Moorfields' Stratford and Brent Cross sites.
Key responsibilities include:
- Establishing and leading a new corneal service at Stratford and Brent Cross.
- Delivering consultant-led corneal outpatient clinics for new and follow-up patients.
- Undertaking corneal surgery and leading corneal theatre sessions.
- Providing expert clinical care and ensuring high standards of patient-centred treatment.
- Contributing to service development, quality improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.
- Supervising, teaching and supporting junior doctors, medical students, observers and allied healthcare professionals.
- Participating in research, audit and educational activities in line with Moorfields' commitment to innovation and excellence.
- Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, effective and high-quality care.
- Supporting performance, quality and governance objectives across the service.
- Contributing to business planning, service development and the continued growth of corneal services within the Trust.
- Maintaining professional standards in line with GMC requirements, appraisal and revalidation processes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will join Moorfields Eye Hospital as a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Cornea, working across the Stratford and Brent Cross sites to establish, develop and lead a new corneal service.
The post holder will be responsible for providing high-quality consultant-led care for patients with corneal and external eye disease, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred services. Clinical duties will include the assessment and management of new and follow-up patients in outpatient clinics, undertaking corneal surgical procedures and theatre lists, and supporting the management of referrals into the Corneal Service.
The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with medical, nursing, allied health professional and managerial colleagues to support service delivery, operational performance and continuous quality improvement. They will contribute to the development of clinical pathways, audit programmes, service improvement initiatives and clinical governance activities to maintain the highest standards of patient care.
The role includes participation in teaching and training activities, providing supervision and support to junior doctors, medical students, observers and allied healthcare professionals. The post holder will also contribute to Moorfields' internationally recognised research, education and innovation agenda through involvement in research, audit and academic activities where appropriate.
As a senior clinical leader, the post holder will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills, support multidisciplinary team working, participate in business planning and service development, and contribute to the achievement of Trust objectives.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
- CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date).
- Full GMC Registration (with a ‘Licence to Practise’)
- Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry
Desirable criteria
- Higher Degree (e.g. MSc, MD or PhD).
Further Training & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Have completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology or equivalent.
- Have completed at least 12 months of post CCT corneal fellowship and be able to demonstrate good outcomes in keratoplasty
- Experience in emergency ophthalmology and managing urgent care eye conditions
Desirable criteria
- Should have received training in educational supervision as defined by the GMC.
- Attended clinical leadership training.
- Prior Consultant Level Experience as a Corneal Specialist
