Job overview
· To ensure the provision of high standards of holistic care for the group of patients within their sphere of responsibility.
· To act as the designated deputy for the Sister/Charge nurse.
· To act as the operational manager in their absence.
· To support the assessing and supervision of student nurses and preceptor newly qualified nurses
Main duties of the job
Demonstrate clinical expertise and act as a professional role model.
Continuously develop clinical skills to meet the needs of the patients within your care.
Assist the Senior Sister/Matron in the implementation of clinical governance within the clinical area.
Be responsible for the management and co-ordination of the clinical area on a day to day basis referring to the Senior Sister as necessary
In accordance with agreed policy, promote the health and safety of patients
Be conversant with and ensure that all staff act within the Trust Policies and Procedures.
To support the Sister / Charge Nurse in the management, planning and development of the nursing service for a ward or similar area of responsibility.
Ensures that all legal and clinical documents are both legible and accurate
Assist with the maintenance of a suitable learning environment, undertaking formal and informal teaching of all staff on a regular basis.
Be prepared and able to accept the role of Student assessor and supervisor and preceptorship of newly qualified nurses
To exercise accountability and professionalism in practice, adhering to NMC Code of professional conduct.
To maintain confidentiality of patients, staff and relatives at all times.
To be aware of issues relating to the data protection act. To ensure that Trust policies and procedures are adhered to.

- RSCN/RN Child Branch
- Mentorship or ENB 998/ Practice Assessor
Desirable criteria
- APALS or EPALS qualification
Education
Essential criteria
- Ability to work at an advanced practice level and confident and competent to make appropriate decisions
- Competent in the administration of IV drugs.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Good working knowledge of current child safeguarding issues
- Understands principles of risk management
