Job overview

Lewisham CAMHS are delighted to be advertising 1 new CYP-PT training post for our IPTA modality .  We are looking for committed and enthusiastic CAMHS practitioner who would like to undertake training  in IPTA modality  of evidence-based therapy. You may be a nurse, social worker or occupational therapist or other professional with experience of working in CAMHS or transferable skills.

Lewisham CAMHS is  comprised of eight multi-disciplinary teams as follows: Core Team (Horizon), Neuro Developmental Team (NDT), Paediatric Liaison Service, SYMBOL Team (Looked After Children), Adolescent Treatment Team, Child Wellbeing Programme, Adolescent Resource and Therapy Service (ARTS) and Mental health in Schools Team (MHST).

We are seeking highly motivated candidates who are enthusiastic about making a difference to children’s mental health through evidence-based interventions based on NICE Guideline recommended treatment.

You will be committed to the CYP Psychological Training Programme core principles: Accessibility, accountability, participation, awareness and evidence-based practice and in providing an inclusive and effective service for children and young people, along with a dedication to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Please note: The position will be based at Lewisham CAMHS but successful candidates will be expected to travel to either Anna Freud in North London (Rodney St, N1 9JH)  for teaching during the training year.

The successful post-holders will complete a post-graduate diploma through University College London , whilst working in one of our multi-disciplinary clinical teams.   You will be expected to carry a clinical caseload, including delivering therapy according to your training modality.

The successful post-holders will complete a post-graduate diploma through University College London  working in one of our multi-disciplinary clinical teams. The post will be based in our Core CAMHS Team.  You will be expected to carry a clinical caseload, including delivering therapy according to your training modality.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

These are training positions and so all candidates will need to apply for both the trainee role within our organisation and to the UCL.  Post Graduate Diploma in CYP-PT Therapy in order to be shortlisted. If you are interested in this modality you must complete applications to  this university. 

Please note that anyone starting an NHSE-funded course is required to wait two years after their graduation exam board before starting another NHSE funded course.

 

Training Information

This full-time training will begin in January 2026 with around 2.5 days a week for academic work (teaching and personal study), and 2.5 days based at the service seeing clients related to training assignments. Trainees will be both an employee of the service and an enrolled student at UCL. Upon completion, qualified trainees will receive a  UCL Postgraduate Diploma.

This is a dual application process. In addition to applying for this position with us, you must also complete a UCL application for the Course Team to review. The Course Teams will liaise with us on whether you meet the academic requirements for the course during the recruitment process. You will only be offered a  UCL training place if you are successful in securing this post and you meet the university training requirements (such as academic background, relevant experience, visa approval). You must be employed in a Recruit to Train funded job to also receive a place on the course, and vice-versa. If you are ineligible for the University Course, we will be unable to be offer the role. If you withdraw from an employment offer but you have accepted a university offer, you will be unable to join the course. Please note in this instance the course is not optional; the roles are dependent on meeting all course requirements. You must apply to the course at the same time as this job.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum second-class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent standard in a relevant subject (e.g. psychology, social work) OR Training in a mental-health related profession (e.g. EMHP, PWP, MH nursing, psychotherapy, counselling)
  • • Registered/accredited Professional Qualification in a MH profession – this is a pre-requisite for future registration with IPTUK.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to study and complete academic work at postgraduate study level;
  • Proven record of previous academic attainment.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of IPT-A principles;
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues relating to safeguarding.
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of adolescent development and its significance for emotional well-being and mental health.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 or more years of post-qualification experience working therapeutically with young people and/or their families within a mental health setting;
  • Experience of multi-agency working and liaising across internal & external agencies.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working with safeguarding issues.
  • Experience of working with adolescents and their families.

Skills / Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with young people and their families and adapt communication styles according to their varying needs.
  • Ability to maintain a reflective stance in emotive/challenging interactions with young people and their families
  • Ability to personally manage sensitive and potentially emotionally distressing caseload material;
  • Ability to reflect on own practice (in clinical supervision and practice tutor groups with course peers);
  • Good time management skills and effective communication

  • Understanding of evidence-based practice and the ability to demonstrate how evidence-based practice influences clinical practice.
