Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to lead complex transformation programmes within a world-renowned organisation. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering one or more strategic, Trust-wide programmes that drive service transformation, quality improvement and operational excellence across The Royal Marsden.
Working with executive sponsors, senior clinical and operational leaders, patients and corporate teams, the post holder will translate organisational objectives into coherent programmes of work, providing leadership and oversight across multiple interdependent projects from scoping and design through to implementation, benefits realisation and transition into business as usual.
Current transformation priorities include enhancing outpatient efficiency, implement innovative developments in Genomics, improving inpatient flow and modernising care pathways across the Trust.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading complex transformation and quality improvement initiatives within a healthcare environment. 
The role requires excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to work confidently with senior clinical leaders, Executive Directors and multidisciplinary teams to drive change, align priorities and deliver measurable benefits.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to lead transformation programmes within a world renowned organisation. The post holder will manage one or more key strategic programmes that drive transformation & quality improvement in healthcare service delivery at The Royal Marsden. The post holder is responsible for a broad portfolio of improvement activities and programme delivery across the trust.
The Royal Marsden has a transformation portfolio in place which includes improving inpatient flow, improving outpatient efficiency, and implementing new strategic developments in genomics.  

This role will lead the prioritisation, planning and delivery of transformation projects arising from one or more of the improvement programmes.

The post holder must have experience of leading quality improvement and/or transformation initiatives, experience in the use of quality improvement techniques, and be able to work alongside clinical and non-clinical staff and patients in the drive for improvement. 
They will be expected to engage senior clinical and operational leaders up to Executive Director level, and support the key stakeholders in the delivery of improvement programmes, through the management of change and transformation in order to secure optimal service outcomes for patients and staff whilst ensuring that the financial benefits of projects are maximised.

Leadership, management and communication

  • Provide leadership for transformation/QI programmes, working and communicating with project stakeholders including Executive Directors, front line staff, patients and carers.
  • Lead programme scoping events and workshops and provide facilitation for project team meetings.
  • Able to present to and generate support from Executive Directors, senior clinical & research teams and colleagues across the Trust.
  • Set programme timescales, managing milestones and overall successful completion of the programme.

Analytical and data management

  • Lead on improving the methods of collection, analysis and presentation of data for improvement.
  • Ensure that all programme and project records and information are maintained in a way that allows timely information to be available.

Planning, organisational & reporting skills

  • Provide a detailed programme of work that drives the progress, and subsequently the implementation of all projects within the programme.
  • Ensure that all projects within the improvement programme are provided with the appropriate level of implementation support throughout the project lifecycle.

Personal and Professional Development

  • Take every reasonable opportunity to maintain and improve your professional knowledge and competence.
  • Participate in personal objective setting and review, including the creation of a Personal Development Plan in conjunction with the Director of Transformation.

Clinical Governance

  • Ensure that effective Clinical and Corporate Governance systems are embedded into any change process introduced across the Trust.
  • Support service leads to undertake risk and equality impact assessments, in relation to current projects and proposed developments.  

Person specification

Education & Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Masters degree or equivalent job related experience or post grad calibre
  • Formal project management or Quality Improvement qualification or demonstrable experience of delivering projects
  • Evidence of continuous personal development
Desirable criteria
  • IHI Improvement Adviser or Improvement Coach

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • The post-holder will require knowledge of a number of disciplines: programme & project management, improvement methodology, financial management, performance management, information systems
  • Track record of successful engagement with clinical leaders
  • Success in achieving substantial organisational change and implementing highly complex projects

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to think strategically and act opportunistically to manage change
  • Highly developed leadership, negotiation, communication and influencing skills and able to negotiate conflict effectively
  • Evidence of effective team working with multiple multi—disciplinary teams and being able to foster good working relationships across multiple teams
  • Able to present complex information simply to Executive Directors, Transformation Board, Divisional Management Boards and other Trust forums
  • Able to design and develop programme reporting and communications for different audiences
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience in using Statistical Process Control
  • Proficient in MS Visio
