Job overview

We are excited to be recruiting for a Divisional Nurse Director working equally across both our Chelsea and Sutton sites, including Kingston.  

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional nurse leader to lead the nursing team within the Cancer Services Division at the Royal Marsden.  The role is a key part of the Divisional Management team working alongside the Director of Operations to support the Clinical Business units.  The role has professional accountability for the workforce, service delivery, service strategy, clinical quality, governance and safety; and the implementation of the Trust’s Nursing strategy.  The Divisional Nurse Director is also a key senior nurse within the Trust professionally accountable to the Chief Nurse and is responsible for the development and delivery of clinical and professional standards and the development of leadership competence and capacity within nursing.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and credible nurse leader with the ability to motivate and inspire staff to deliver the highest possible clinical and professional standards.  You will be a clinical role model and will be passionate about improvement and patient-centred care.  You will possess relevant professional qualifications plus additional specialist management knowledge, acquired through training and experience.

Main duties of the job

The Divisional Nurse Director (DND) is an essential part of the Divisional Management Team led by the Divisional Director together with the Divisional Medical Director, Service Managers, and the Finance and Human Resources Managers. The role has professional accountability for 
the workforce, service delivery, clinical quality and safety and the implementation of the Trust’s Nursing strategy. 


The post holder will be responsible for defining divisional nursing objectives to meet corporate goals and ensuring that quality standards are met and performance addressed where this is not the case.
Reporting professionally to the Chief Nurse the DND is responsible for the development and delivery of clinical and professional standards and the development of leadership competence and capacity within nursing. This will be in line with agreed objectives, targets, quality standards, resource controls and constraints and will contribute to delivering the Trust strategy.


The DND will provide professional leadership for the Cancer Services Division and will develop and deliver the divisional strategy for nursing, which meets both the Trust and national professional agendas. The DND is a full member of the Nursing, Rehabilitation & Radiography Advisory Committee (NRRAC).

To provide visible, supportive and high profile professional leadership for all nurses within the division.

To fulfil at least four clinical shifts a month working with junior and senior nurses in the division, rotating throughout the wards / units in the division across both sites.

To be accountable for the provision of optimum nursing care within the Division in accordance with the NMC and Trust Standards

To provide professional nursing advice to the Divisional Director of Cancer Services and across all Cancer Services Clinical Business Units (CBUs).

To manage the senior nursing staff within the Division such as the Matrons, Lead Nurses, and Nurse Consultants.

To contribute to the Divisions corporate strategic and operational management, alongside the Divisional Medical Director and Clinical Business Managers, ensuring delivery of the Trusts service and business strategy set by the Board.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level registered Nurse
  • First degree in a relevant subject
  • Masters level degree in a related subject
Desirable criteria
  • A management qualification or demonstrable experience in managing staff in a related subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical background in the care and management of people with cancer
  • Significant experience in corporate service management of a hospital,
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development, and developing clinical practice
  • A track record of effective management of change
  • Evidence of commitment to good management practices
  • Evidence of track record of developing nursing practice
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
