Job overview

As physiotherapists we are key members of a multidisciplinary team geared to the rehabilitation of patients undergoing surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy in both in and outpatient settings. Oncology provides a challenging environment for developing a number of skills including clinical reasoning, communication and multi-professional working. Ongoing professional training and development is encouraged and supported.
We are looking for a band 5 physiotherapist to join our physiotherapy team on the Chelsea site. You will have the opportunity to develop your inpatient physiotherapy skills and build your knowledge within the field of oncology with support from the senior team. This is a fixed term contract for 12 months and you will gain experience across the cancer pathway including prehabilitation, rehabilitation, inpatient and CCU settings.
Main duties of the job
1.1 The Band 5 Physiotherapist provides a high quality cost-effective physiotherapy service for the people with cancer. As a qualified practitioner, the postholder is a source of knowledge and expertise for patients, relatives and colleagues of all disciplines. With the support of the Band 7 and Band 6 physiotherapists, they will provide specialist assessment and treatment to adults in the acute setting with rehabilitation needs across the pathway of treatment and different tumour groups. The post holder will work as part of the physiotherapy team and wider MDT and will be supported and supervised by a Band 6 or Band 7 physiotherapist.

To assess, differentially diagnose and manage adults with reduced physical functioning from cancer diagnosis and or/treatment under the support/ supervision of a senior Physiotherapist as appropriate.
To manage and prioritise a defined in-patient and out-patient caseload independently with support and supervision from more senior Physiotherapists, and to manage and prioritise own workload including balance between administrative and clinical duties.
Developing and implementing individual specialised therapeutic rehabilitation programmes specific to patients’ needs based on assessment using a patient-centred, evidence based, problem solving approach.
To commence competencies relevant to all rotations under supervision.

- Member of CSP or have equivalent Indemnity cover
- Registered member of HCPC
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with adult inpatients. This can be from student placements however examples of development of core skills in this area must be demonstrated.
- Experience of working with adult outpatients. This can be from student placements however examples of development of core skills in this area must be demonstrated.
- Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with patients from multicultural/lingual backgrounds and working with interpreters.
- Experience of working in oncology
- Experience of acute respiratory, and able to take part in on-call and weekend rota
Skills / Abilities
Essential criteria
- Developed clinical reasoning as well as analytical and creative problems solving skills.
- Ability to prioritise workload demands.
- Ability to acknowledge need for, and seek support
- Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills as required in an oncology and palliative care setting. Ability to deal with imparting bad news.
- Ability to produce professional reports and records including, multi-professional care plans, letters, assessments for hospital and external agencies.
- Ability to reflect on clinical practice.
- Ability to work as part of a supportive team.
- Ability to work in a highly motivated, self-directed manner on clinical and departmental activities
- Proven ability to prepare and deliver presentations and education sessions to health care colleagues and members of public.
- Well developed concentration skills
- Ability to enter data, prepare reports, formal written documentation and multi-media presentations.
Desirable criteria
- Ability to prioritise and manage time effectively.
- Ability to fulfil supervisory role for undergraduate students.
- Ability to teach both patients and carers in areas relating to rehabilitation.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and demonstration of assessment and rehabilitation interventions relevant to inpatients, surgical and medical patients
- Knowledge of cultural and linguistic issues in working with a multi cultural caseload
- Awareness of the principles of clinical governance/ audit
- Awareness of the roles of other professionals.
- Awareness of the standards of record keeping
Desirable criteria
- knowledge of national policies, procedures and current research relevant to oncology in adults.
