Sarcoma Surgical Research Doctor

NHS Medical & Dental: Local Appointment nodal point 4-5 (MT04-MT05)

Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Clinical Research Doctor to join the Surgical Oncology Research Group at The Royal Marsden Hospital and The Institute of Cancer Research. This 2–3 year post offers a unique opportunity to undertake a PhD within the HOLO-AIM project—Holographic surgical guidance using Artificial Intelligence and Mixed reality for safer and more efficient Surgery—funded by NIHR i4i.
The fellow will work at the interface of advanced oncological surgery, translational research, and surgical technology innovation. Supervised by Mr Myles Smith (RMH/ICR) and collaborating with expert teams at Imperial College’s Hamlyn Centre and Holocare, the fellow will play a pivotal role in developing and clinically evaluating an AI-driven mixed reality platform for intraoperative navigation. This position is ideal for a surgical trainee interested in digital surgery, precision surgery, and clinical trial design, and offers substantial exposure to complex surgical oncology including pelvic surgery, sarcoma, melanoma, and advanced cutaneous malignancies.

Main duties of the job

  • Register for and undertake a PhD at the ICR focused on mixed reality and computer vision technologies for surgical guidance.
  • Lead elements of the HOLO-AIM project’s clinical evaluation workstreams (WP7), including trial protocol development, trial setup, ethics, and regulatory submissions.
  • Contribute to the development, validation, and refinement of the MR surgical guidance platform, including input into segmentation, registration, and user interface testing.
