Job overview

The post is fixed term for 6 months (6 monthly rotational posts in the Surgical sub-specialties, choice of post is subject to availability and assessment during interview). 
 
This post is particularly appropriate for applicants who are approaching core surgical training. Candidates who have completed foundation training are welcomed to apply.  
 
The Royal Marsden NHS Trust has a well-established surgical program across all surgical specialties and this is an excellent opportunity to increase experience in surgical oncology.  
 
The successful candidate would be able to gain significant experience in various subspecialties such as  Sarcoma, Melanoma and Rare Tumours (SMART), Breast, Colorectal, Gynaecology, Head & Neck with Thyroid, UGI , Urology and  Plastic  surgery within a team that is very keen to train and support surgical development.  The post holder will work closely within their allocated firm and will also provide cross cover for other surgical firms as and when required. The post covers the full range of surgical oncology firms when on call. These include Gynaecology, Colorectal, UGI and Breast. 

Main duties of the job

This is a Trust grade post in surgical oncology. The applicant will participate in the surgical and medical rota and be required to work alongside all surgical firms.  
 
Duties include: 

Clinics 
•    The post holder will support new diagnostic and follow-up clinics.  
 
Theatres
•    The post holder will have the opportunity to participate in theatre sessions.  
 
On-call
•    The post holder will be expected to partake in the surgical and medical on-call for the Trust. It is a resident rota and provides cover for both sites of the Trust. On-call arrangements will be within the regulation of the European Union directive.  

Other
•    Attendance at multi-disciplinary meeting.  

•    The post holder is expected to cross cover for colleagues for periods of leave and absence.  

•    Trust Grades are accountable to the Head of Department and will be required to partake in continuing medical education in accordance with national guidelines.  
•    The post holder is expected to cross cover for absent colleagues as and when required and to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.  

•    The post holder undertakes exceptionally to be available for irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.  

•    The candidate is expected to participate in the departmental teaching and journal club, and there may be opportunities to present at these activities.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • MRCS, MRCP or MRCOG part 1, 2 or equivalent primary exam
  • Higher Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • General Surgery or any Surgical experience at ST1/2 level
  • Motivated to ensure the achievement of defined targets
Desirable criteria
  • NHS Experience
  • Undertaken research in relevant field
