We have seven modern theatres in Chelsea which includes three robotic theatres, and three theatres in Sutton. We cover a wide range of specialties, including Sarcoma and Melanoma, Upper and Lower GI, Plastics, Head and Neck, Gynaecology, Urology and Breast, using a wide range of surgical techniques. Our theatres anaesthetic team is trusted, skilled, hardworking and supportive, and we’re looking for a motivated and experienced anaesthetic lead who can demonstrate leadership qualities and a real interest in high quality perioperative care to join us.

Main duties of the job

  • To lead and manage the anaesthetic support staff under the guidance of the Matron
  • Organising the day-to-day Anaesthetic support service in consultation with the Matron to ensure appropriate and economic allocation of staff and resources.
  • Organising and participating in on-call/standby rotas to provide 24 hours emergency cover and to report anaesthetic service problems to the Matron
  • Produce and maintain records for off duty, on-call / standby hours, annual leave and sickness for anaesthetic support staff
  • Liaise with other clinical team leaders to rationalise stock levels, ordering, receiving and disposable of consumables.
  • Ensuring there is adequate anaesthetic and surgical equipment
  • Support the Matron and other colleagues in the planning and delivery of quality and risk management initiatives and targets
  • Assist in developing evidenced based practice following quality standards and relevant audits
  • Identifying relevant training and education requirements for the anaesthetic support staff in collaboration with the Practice Educators
  • Support other clinical teams in the absence of their sister / Charge Nurse / Clinical Lead including the Sutton Theatre Service

  • Lead a team within the anaesthetic department in providing a comprehensive service that supports the anaesthetists and surgeons in optimising a high standard of quality patient care
  • Maintain up to date clinical credibility through practice and the utilisation of clinical skills, and in the provision of specialised assistance to the anaesthetists
  • Assist the Matron in developing and updating anaesthetic policies, procedures and guidelines consultation with the anaesthetists and anaesthetic support staff
  • Provide technical and clinical support to medical staff involved in all aspects of intradepartmental and intra-hospital transfers
  • Through the on-call system provide clinical and technical support to areas where respiratory and cardiovascular techniques and equipment are supplied

Education/ Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse or ODP
  • ENB167/183/182 or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current experience in a senior operating theatre role
  • Experience in recruitment, selection, and retention of staff
  • Evidence of organising and delivering education for multi professional staff
  • Experience in staff development plans, appraisal and KSF process
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of dealing with HR issues relating performance/capability

Skills/ Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good level of clinical skills within one or more of the perioperative disciplines
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own and other workload
  • Knowledge/experience of clinical supervision
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively in a multi disciplinary team
