Job overview

As Therapists we are key members of a multidisciplinary team geared to the rehabilitation of patients undergoing surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy in both in and outpatient settings. Band 8b Associate Lead of Therapies, and Professional Lead of Physiotherapy, full-time, fixed term contract until 30th April 2029. An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced Physiotherapist to join the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will be the Professional Lead for Physiotherapy and an Associate Lead of Therapies, providing operational, professional and strategic leadership for the physiotherapy service, and lead Therapies in prehabilitation/ rehabilitation, breast, sarcoma, urology and living with and beyond cancer, as well as therapy services including lymphoedema.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will provide strategic leadership for rehabilitation and prehabilitation and professional leadership for the physiotherapists. Have responsibility for clinical leadership and line management of prehabilitation and tumour group services, in line with service needs.
  •  The post holder will undertake all aspects of the role as an autonomous practitioner providing clinical judgement, knowledge, skills and experience in physiotherapy. This role will provide clinical leadership, drive innovation, support research and provide strategic direction to the rehabilitation service to ensure the provision of high quality patient centred care. It is a senior operational and strategic role to support the delivery of an evidence-based and high quality rehabilitation service.
  • Have responsibility for the maintenance of a clinical caseload. Undertake and oversee all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner. To be a source of advanced and expert knowledge, advising where necessary in the care of complex cases.
  • To provide clinical leadership and line management to services delivering prehabilitation and advise/support heads of therapy services to deliver a high quality rehabilitation service

  • Promote developments of multi-professional therapy practices and patient-centred services in line with the Therapy multidisciplinary working model and national strategy for AHPs.
  • Provide expert clinical leadership, develop innovative practice and act as a resource of rehabilitation expertise, which may span and influence different staff groups and organisations.
  • Deputise for the Head of Therapies in their absence as required. On behalf of the Divisional Director and Head of Therapies to authorise expenditure, control stock levels and be responsible for resource allocation for therapy  services.
  • Coordinate and balance patient and service priorities for rehabilitation and prehabilitation and ensure that an appropriate skill mix is regularly reviewed and maintained.  Identify areas for development and submit appropriate business plans with therapy service leads for the deliverer of rehabilitation services in line with set strategy.
  • Ensure that Rehabilitation and Prehabilitation  is represented in relevant multi-professional working parties both locally within the Trust and at a national level. The post holder will be encouraged to work with relevant professional associations and relevant committees at national and international level. 
  •  To assist individuals and therapy teams in identifying their own particular learning needs to promote and facilitate the development of a learning environment to enable others to achieve their potential.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy with Health and Care Professions Council registration
  • Master’s in relevant area
  • Post-graduation study days/courses in oncology/rehabilitation

Experience / Skills

Essential criteria
  • Expertise in rehabilitation & prehabilitation and able to demonstrate credibility
  • Proven experience of leading rehabilitation / prehabilitation programmes within oncology
  • Experience of joint working with academic institutions supporting rehabilitation training in oncology
  • Exceptional skills and advanced levels of clinical judgement, knowledge and experience to underpin and progress the delivery of a rehabilitation/prehabilitation agenda
  • Ability to manage change and contain conflict ensuring resolution with positive outcomes
  • Negotiation skills to motivate and inspire others

Knowledge / Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Expertise in rehabilitation group dynamics, planning, facilitating, running and evaluating therapeutic groups
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills demonstrating the use of a variety of media
  • Ability to lead within the profession and develop multi professional working in the organisation and across organisational boundaries
  • Ability to design and implement new service models
  • Strategic planning abilities
  • Ability to translate and integrate evidence based research/ guidelines into the development of local pathways of care
  • Understanding of commissioning process leading to service development
  • Understanding of the impact of current government and national health care developments and the impact on cancer care
