Job overview

Croydon University Hospital NHS Trust wishes to appoint a full-time fixed-term (12 months) Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with a specialist interest in knee surgery, commencing 1 May 2026.

 

This post has been created to meet increased service demand in knee surgery during a period of planned sabbatical leave of a well-known regionally and nationally substantive knee consultant and to ensure continuity of elective and trauma services. This is a time-limited post of 12 months and is not intended as a substantive appointment.

 

The successful applicant will provide expertise in:

• Primary total knee replacement

• Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement

• Soft tissue knee surgery, including patellofemoral joint pathology

Main duties of the job

The post holder will integrate within the existing consultant body to deliver high-quality elective knee surgery and contribute to the general trauma service, including upper and lower limb trauma.

To support and further develop the management of patients accessing the service, the post holder will be expected to work with a team of trauma surgeon as part of 7 days trauma service. This requires knowledge, experience and expertise in undertaking general trauma, periarticular and complex lower limb fracture including periprosthetic fracture around knee replacament.

 

This appointment is as an on-going strategy to develop excellence in standards of delivery of orthopaedic care in line with London emergency standards. They will be expected to provide a week of an emergency commitment 1 in 12.

 

The post holder will join a team of 14 Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeons and will participate in the 1 in 12 on call duties at CUH. The post holder also required to support senior grade staff grade and associate specialist to develop further.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of general Orthopaedic patients admitted under his/her care and on call on a 1 in 12 rota based at the Croydon site.

 

The orthopaedic on call rota will run as Consultant of the Week (emergency committed only) from Friday 8am until Friday 8am the following week in line with the London Emergency Standards 1 in 12

 

There is 1 in 12 weekend commitment. The post holder will share the junior staff and will be responsible for training of CT1 and STs as well as Trust Grade Doctors. Consultants are required to be onsite and free of other commitments when on call during normal working hours. The successful applicant will provide a daily ward round when on call and will be free of clinical commitments as part of the 24 hours emergency surgery guidelines.

 

The post holder will be working closely an excellent physiotherapist and consultant physiotherapy team with in the department covering various aspect of service from triaging to see and treat model. 

 

It would be expected that the appointee will undertake a minimum of 8.5 programmed activities for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting duties. Normally these are expected to be carried out on site, though this may be negotiable in respect of the supporting activities. The job plan is annualised and run over an twelve-week timetable. The table following are some of the specific clinical duties expected of the employee. The department workload and planning often requires a degree of personal flexibility. The final timetable will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Lead and Service Manager following appointment. Any further changes to the job plan must be for the betterment of the service and have the full support of the specialty division together with the Medical Director's agreement.

  • • Full GMC registration • An appropriate higher surgical qualification • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT. (CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights • Fellowship trained in knee surgery including soft tissue knee surgery fellowship • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Major Trauma Centre

Relevant clinical experience
