Job overview
The individual in this role will divide their time equally between two key responsibilities: providing clinical support to newly qualified midwives and developing educational opportunities for maternity assistants (MAs) and maternity support workers (MSWs) in alignment with the Health Education England (HEE) framework.
Preceptorship Lead:
The post holder will be responsible for supporting newly qualified midwives to successfully achieve essential clinical competencies, ensuring their practice is both evidence-based and safe.
This element of the role focuses on reviewing existing training provisions and developing tailored, role-specific programmes to meet the learning needs of MAs and MSWs. This includes creating comprehensive orientation packs for each clinical area, ensuring that support staff are well-prepared for their roles.
A core aim of the role is to support the retention and development of the MA/MSW workforce by offering ongoing training and clearly defined career progression. The post holder will also play a key role in the implementation of the apprenticeship pathway for MAs wishing to progress to Band 3.
The Preceptorship Clinical Support Midwife/Practice Educator for MSWs will work closely with the Practice Development Midwives (PDMs) and Clinical Practice Facilitators (CPFs) to deliver coordinated training, education, and recruitment activities.
Main duties of the job
- To lead in the support of newly qualified midwives and internationally recruited midwives in collaboration
with the practice education and senior management teams. - To facilitate and deliver a preceptorship programme in collaboration with Capital Midwife preceptorship programme. Liaise with multidisciplinary colleagues to facilitate this programme
- To support the practice education team and senior midwifery management team to promote an environment of life-long learning for maternity staff
- To review current mandatory training programmes in place and develop a bespoke training programme that meets the needs of the MA/MSW workforce.
- To support the retention of the MA/MSW workforce and provide ongoing learning and development.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, supervision and shadowing opportunities to each individual to support their professional development.
Please note: This secondment opportunity is initially expected to run until 1st of June 2026 with the anticipated return of the current post holder. However the end date may be revised depending on the circumstance at the time.

- First degree or equivalent advanced study
Desirable criteria
