We are seeking an experienced and ambitious finance leader to join our Finance Directorate as Assistant Director of Finance - Income & Costing. This is a key senior role responsible for leading the Trust's income and costing functions, ensuring robust financial governance, accurate income reporting and high-quality financial insight to support decision-making across the organisation.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Finance Officer, you will lead the Trust's income management, costing, benchmarking and activity planning functions. You will oversee the development of Patient Level Information and Costing Systems (PLICS), Service Line Reporting and income forecasting, ensuring the Trust has a deep understanding of its activity, costs and income drivers. Working closely with clinical, operational and corporate colleagues, you will help identify opportunities to improve productivity, drive value and support the delivery of high-quality sustainable services.

The successful candidate will play a central role in the Trust's financial planning process, ensuring effective triangulation of activity, income and expenditure and providing assurance on the robustness of financial assumptions and forecasts. You will act as the Trust's lead expert on income and costing matters, engaging with commissioners, NHS England and internal stakeholders to support strategic decision-making and organisational performance.

We are looking for a CCAB-qualified accountant with significant senior NHS finance experience, including expertise in income, costing, planning and performance management. You will be an effective leader with excellent analytical and communication skills, capable of influencing at senior levels and building strong relationships across a wide range of stakeholders.

The post provides senior leadership for the Trust’s income and costing functions, ensuring robust financial governance, accurate income recognition and high‑quality reporting to support organisational performance. The role is responsible for overseeing monthly income reporting, forecasting and variance analysis, ensuring alignment with contractual arrangements and maintaining audit‑ready processes and controls.

A key aspect of the role is leading the development of costing, Patient Level Information and Costing Systems (PLICS), and service line reporting, providing detailed insight into the cost and performance of services. This includes driving benchmarking and analysis to identify opportunities for efficiency, productivity improvement and service transformation, and supporting the delivery of Cost Improvement Programmes.

The post also plays a central role in financial planning, leading the triangulation of activity, income and expenditure to ensure that plans are robust, aligned to operational assumptions and reflect contractual frameworks. The role works closely with clinical and operational teams to embed financial understanding within services and to support effective decision-making.

In addition, the role provides strategic leadership to the income and costing team and acts as a key interface with external partners, including commissioners and NHS England. It ensures the Trust is well‑positioned in relation to national policy, contractual requirements and benchmarking, and provides assurance to the Executive Team and Board on income performance, financial risks and opportunities.
