Job overview

The Maternity Support Worker is expected to undertake an agreed range  of skills in the inpatient ward areas. The midwife will be responsible for all care and supervision; the task being done must be within the framework of a care plan.

The Maternity Support Worker will be an effective member of the team and will provide support in a kind, considerate and professional manner to the woman and her family in providing holistic care.  The maternity support worker is required to work within a clinical area of the maternity department, whilst at all times working under the direction of the midwife present within the department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Maternity Support Worker plays a key role within the multidisciplinary maternity team, supporting midwives and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, high-quality, and compassionate care to women and their families throughout the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a registered midwife, ensuring dignity, respect, and emotional support at all times
  • Assist with routine clinical tasks such as monitoring vital signs, documenting observations, and reporting any concerns promptly
  • Support women with infant feeding, personal care, mobility, and comfort needs
  • Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and well-equipped clinical environment, including preparing equipment and restocking supplies
  • Assist with admission, discharge, and patient flow to ensure smooth running of the maternity service
  • Provide reassurance and effective communication to women, birthing partners, and families
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to support continuity of care and positive patient outcomes
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with Trust policies and guidelines
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures, safeguarding policies, and health and safety requirements

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of general education
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of recent futher study

Knowledge and Understanding

Essential criteria
  • Can demonstrate that they have worked with women, babies and their fmilies before
Desirable criteria
  • Has experience with breastfeeding support
  • Can perform venepuncture
  • Can perform NBBS
  • Has awareness of working with new mum's and families and what support they may require

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of IT and computing skills e.g. emails and Cerner
  • Good communicator and understands the role of advocacy
Desirable criteria
  • Has used cerner before
  • Can access Emails and understands the importance of professional communication

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working in an acute clinical setting
  • Has worked either on a postnatal ward or in the community setting as a support worker
Desirable criteria
  • Worked as a community maternity support worker before
