Job overview
This is a new post that will be available from October 2025. The post holder will be expected to participate in a weekly Lung Cancer multidisciplinary meeting, one Lung Cancer clinic per week, one virtual Lung nodule clinic per week and a weekly tracking meeting to review the PTL (patient tracking list)/ They will work with the Lung cancer specialist nursing team during the week to ensure timely management of lung cancer patients in line with the National Optimal Lung Cancer pathway and Faster Diagnosis Standard. There will also be the opportunity to develop a Monday-Friday ambulatory Pleural service. In addition, the individual will be required to deliver 3 sessions to the Acute Medical Unit, consisting of consultant of the day for SDEC including the evening post take ward round. There will also be time allocated to a general respiratory clinic, a weekly bronchoscopy list as well as time dedicated to teaching and training of junior staff.
It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to quality improvement and delivery of inpatient, outpatient and emergency work; there will be SPA time is allocated to achieve this. They will provide a strong visible presence across the organisation, be a role model of good leadership and effective communication at individual, team, directorate and whole organisation level.
Main duties of the job
1. To provide General Internal Medicine and specialist respiratory and TB medicine service; this includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department and the patient flow across the Directorate.
2. Responsible for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness
3. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives
5. Responsible for in-patient and out-patient clinic commitments as agreed by Croydon Health Services

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
- Inclusion in the specialist register for Respiratory and General Internal Medicine, or within 6 months of CCST at time of interview
- Full registration with the GMC
- MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum two years’ experience in Respiratory medicine at SpR level or equivalent.
- High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty
- Experience in the management of lung cancer
- Experience in the management of sleep and ventilation
- Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on-call rota for the specialty
- Competence in diagnostic bronchoscopy and pleural ultrasound
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of research in relevant specialty
- Experience in service development
- Competence in EBUS
Management & Leadership
Essential criteria
- Experience in day to day organisation of services in a busy teaching hospital
- Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
- Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
- Ability to organise and manage work
- Understanding of the principles of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
- Experience in the development of clinical guidelines
- Management course and/or qualification
Audit & Research
Essential criteria
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
- Experience of clinical research
Desirable criteria
- Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of specialty specific topic
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
- Evidence of original work as demonstrated by publications in peer reviewed journals
