Sexual Health Adviser
Fixed Term - 12 months. Band -6, Part Time - 20.50 hours per week
We are looking for a dedicated Sexual Health Adviser with a focus on supporting patients through our BBV testing program, ensuring confirmatory testing and partner notification. This involves:
- Providing support and education for clients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
- Leading pre- and post-test discussions for HIV.
- Ensuring a smooth transition from GUM to HIV services for newly diagnosed patients.
- Managing specific projects alongside the lead sexual health advisor.
- Delivering targeted prevention, education, and support for young and vulnerable individuals.
- Collaborating with key services, including Sexual Health & HIV teams, Emergency Departments, Primary Care, Safeguarding, and outreach organisations.

Main duties of the job
- Provide support, information and health education for clients diagnosed with HIV & sexually transmitted infections, with onward referral as required.
- Support patients with inconclusive HIV results until resolution.
- Provide effective partner notification (PN) in order to fulfil a public health role by securing the attendance and treatment outcomes of contacts.
- To liaise with other GUM/HIV clinics nationally to facilitate partner notification.
- To independently manage own caseload, including safeguarding referrals and more challenging Provider Referral PN in HIV.
To engage with clients specifically around risk reduction and behaviour change, using evidenced based tools such as Motivational Interviewing. - Provide comprehensive risk assessment of patients in crisis and make onwards referrals to appropriate specialist services e.g. Psychology/Psychiatry & Substance Misuse services
- Results Management and Recalls in order to secure attendance of patients requiring treatment or other essential follow up

Person specification
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- RGN (1st level) / RMN or Degree in Health Promotion, Sociology, Psychology or Relevant Public Health qualification to degree level or beyond
- Accredited Counselling qualification or Evidence of further substantive study / qualifications in the field of Risk Reduction or Behaviour Change or Public Health
Desirable criteria
- Advanced STIF Course
- Evidence of further substantive education in the field of Sexual or Reproductive health
- Phlebotomy qualification and current practice.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Essential criteria
- Good knowledge of the principles and practice around Partner Notification in STIs and HIV
- To have excellent up-to-date clinical knowledge of STIs and HIV and how these impact pregnancy
- To have knowledge of different contraceptive methods and to assess for Emergency Contraception.
- Knowledge and application of Person-Centred Counselling approach.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of PN with challenging service-users
- Knowledge of recent changes in clinical practice, eg PEPSE criteria.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous substantive experience of working as a Health Adviser in a UK Sexual Health clinic
- Experience in Partner Notification, including Provider Referral
- Previous experience of 1:1 work with clients in a sexual Health/Health promotion context
- Direct experience of working with young people
- Experience of managing positive results and recalling patients with untreated infections
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in an Integrated Sexual health / Reproductive health setting
